How to stay safe on Cyber Monday
Safety First on Cyber Monday
By cnycentral.com on Monday, November 30th 2015Cyber Monday deals will be enticing you all over the internet this Monday and it's important to keep your guard up so you don't become victim of a scam.
"If you look at buying on Craigslist I absolutely recommend against that because you really don't know what you're going to get," said David Milman, CEO of RescueCom which is a computer repair store in Syracuse. "The smartest thing you can do is connect with somebody reputable that can give you advice and direction on what the best thing to do is."
Websites like Amazon and EBay are usually safe places to go according to Milman.
Doing your research is important. According to the FBI more than 14,000 New Yorkers reported being scammed on the internet in 2014.
Holidays bring out the scammers in droves, according to the state, and they are looking to get your personal information. New York State saw more than 3,000 identity theft complaints reported the 2014 holiday shopping season.
The state consumer protection unit suggests not using public WiFi to complete any online purchases as that is one way someone could access your personal information.
