Internet Security: Fake Anti Virus Programs
RESCUECOM reminds users to utilize only legitimate anti virus software, such as our Internet Security Suite.
A common cyber attack uses fake anti virus software as a means for infecting computers with malware. These attackers rely on fear to trick users into violating their own Internet security.
The attacks utilize a realistic looking anti virus software alert to convince users their system is infected. The alert warns that Internet security has been breached, requiring a full scan and cleaning. At that point, users are typically prompted to purchase an anti virus program, which infects the computer.
The rogue Internet security programs are really malware. The downloaded program performs a fake scan, while simultaneously installing malware to steal passwords or financial information or even provide permanent access to the computer.
To avoid being victimized, RESCUECOM encourages everyone to use only legitimate anti virus software, such as our Internet Security Suite. Should the need arise, our technicians can help you remove the rogue programs and protect yourself for the future.
