Philip Kaplan Makes Musicians’ Life Easier With Fandalism and Distrokid
Online services have helped empower content creators in several major industries. The music industry has arguably seen the largest shift of all since the Internet became ubiquitous. Software exists that can turn a home desktop computer into an adequate recording studio. Online music services like iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon Music allow musicians to make their music globally available. However, there are still difficulties getting your work onto those online music services. Philip Kaplan, founder of Distrokid, is a cool person trying to fix that problem. Kaplan, a musician himself, has been successful building Internet businesses in the past and is now turning his attention towards helping musicians with his new service Distrokid.
Kaplan’s Distrokid service aims to make it easy for musicians to make their work widely available. Any musician can join Distrokid and upload their music to the site. The service will then post a user’s music not only to iTunes, but also to Spotify, Amazon, and even the Google Play music store. Distrokid streamlines the process of distributing your music online and the site even claims that it only takes between two and four hours for your music to be online and ready for sale. Apple’s iTunes service is particularly popular for online music sales. If you have trouble uploading to iTunes or even just using the program, Apple support is a good idea. Kaplan’s brainchild could potentially save countless musicians time and stress by letting them publish their music quickly and easily.
Distrokid isn’t the only online service for musicians that Kaplan has founded. He also started Fandalism, a social network designed for musicians, in 2011. The site allows musicians to share their work with other musicians for critique and find performers to collaborate with on projects or gigs. For example, a band looking for a drummer can search through percussionists on the site and view their posted performances as an instant audition. Artists can send messages to each other if they want to meet up and collaborate.
Both Fandalism and Distrokid are examples of Kaplan’s vision to use online resources to make musicians’ lives easier through technology. If you’re a musician who has trouble using either service, finding computer support is essential.
Kaplan was no stranger to building online companies when he founded Fandalism. He had already successfully started several other companies in previous years, including e-mail service TinyLetter, social commerce site Blippy and online ad network Adbrite. Kaplan is a cool person who knows what it takes to succeed in the online service market.
