When You Need To Match Paint, Be Sure Your Dealer Has The Auto-Match III Sensor!

There are many very cool products that businesses use to improve a customer’s shopping experience or life.  From products that monitor waste water to computer programs that monitor toxins in the air, almost every major industry contains gadgets that perform a vital function.  Many of those devices work behind-the-scenes to deliver superior results on a project or as part of a service.  It is often important that a business have the best possible equipment to help you get the results you want on your projects.  When it comes to house painting, the Auto-Match III is one such essential device.

The Auto-Match III is a sensor produced by BYK.  The Auto-Match III is a safe-like box under six inches square and nine and a half inches deep.  The box weighs just over seven pounds and has a small door in which you place a paint sample.  The safe-like design of the Auto-Match III prevents any light interference from entering the sensor and polluting the results of a scan.

The Auto-Match III is very easy to use.  When you bring a paint sample with the color you want to the Auto-Match III and place the sample inside, the spectrophotometer scans the sample.  One of the key selling points of this sensor is that it operates at 45/0 circumferential illumination, so it scans the sample at precisely the way your eye breaks down light.  In addition to being exceptionally accurate with the precise breakdown of light for color matching, the Auto-Match III renders colors in a way that you will perceive them as identical.  Because temperature affects the way light travels, many spectrophotometers require constant calibration.  However, the closed-system nature of the Auto-Match III eliminates temperature variables to give you clean, crisp results every time.

Why is the Auto-Match III such an important, cool device when it comes to matching paint colors?  The Auto-Match III sensor works in conjunction with the Auto-Match III software to accurately evaluate and replicate colors in a way no other single system does.  At least two different paint manufacturers feature applications for the Apple iPhone that allows you to match any color you photograph with paint from their line.  Unfortunately, the results wildly differ based on the amount of light in the room when you take the picture.  Other color matching programs for the PC fail to take into account that most computer monitors are not calibrated to the expert standards professional photographers or painters use on their equipment.  Thus, you may take a picture and look at it on your monitor and denounce it as the wrong color simply because your monitor is not properly tuned.  The Auto-Match III sensor and software eliminate those variables.

No matter how big or small your painting project is, you deserve to get the color you expect when you purchase paint.  BYK’s Auto-Match III sensor ensures you get accurately-scanned, precisely rendered, information on any paint sample so that you may replicate the color you want without flaws!

Cool Product Of Yesteryear: Victorinox Apple Swiss Army Knife!

Sometimes the neatest things take a while to appreciate.  What is cheap advertising propaganda one year might become a sought-after collectible decades later.  Like most businesses, Apple Computers has had its commercial surges.  During the lean years, of course, the “Apple culture” becomes less trendy and merchandising around the brand seems tackier.  But with the success of Apple Computers from the iPods, iPads and iPhones, Apple swag from years gone by is once again hip.  One of the coolest pieces of Apple-related merchandise is the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife with Apple logo!

Victorinox is the official company that makes Swiss Army Knives.  Actually, they are the only one who makes legitimate Swiss Army Knives; all other companies make “pen knives.”  As anyone who has ever had a Swiss Army Knife (or any other pen knife) can attest, there are thousands of situations when it is a handy tool to have.  Back in the early 1980s, Victorinox partnered with Apple Computers to release an Apple Computers Swiss Army Knife!  You may find the Apple Swiss Army Knife fairly easily online in the traditional red or a bright blue color.  The fundamental difference between Victorinox’s Apple knife and the traditional Swiss Army Knife is that the Swiss cross on the standard Swiss Army Knife has been replaced by the Apple Computers apple logo on the limited edition knife.

The Apple Swiss Army Knife comes with standard tools, no matter what the knife’s handle color.  Each Apple Swiss Army Knife comes with scissors, a nail file, a small blade and tweezers.  If you are buying your Apple knife on the secondary market, be sure to check the spring on the scissors.  The thin metal spring on the scissors of Swiss Army Knives from the ‘80s wore out comparatively quickly and if the spring is worn or missing from the knife you are buying, the price should reflect that.  Victorinox produced a classy metal gift box for the Apple knife, so you may safely transport or display your vintage Apple knife.

A lot has changed since the early ‘80s, but Apple is even cooler now than it was then.  As a result, tracking down one of the vintage Victorinox Apple Swiss Army Knives can make for a very cool gift for Apple enthusiasts now.  Just do not try to get on a plane with this handy tool!

The Iqua 603 Sun Bluetooth Headset: Solar Powered Phoning!

With more and more states adopting hands free laws and the National Traffic Safety Board issuing an advisory to Congress that no electronic devices should be used while driving, Bluetooth technology is becoming more important than ever.  With so many different Bluetooth headsets on the market, it can be difficult to determine which Bluetooth headset is the right one for you.  One of the best on the market, especially for those who are environmentally conscientious, is the Iqua 603 Sun Bluetooth headset.

The Iqua Sun is a discrete Bluetooth headset that does not call much attention to itself.  With its muted black shell and earbud-style design, the Iqua Sun is not as flashy as many Bluetooth headsets.  The fact that the Iqua Sun does not sparkle or try to impress users with its simple appearance is not a good reason to disregard this very cool Bluetooth headset.  This Bluetooth has substance and it comes in the form of its solar powered battery.

The Iqua Sun is solar powered, which makes it one of the most environmentally-responsible Bluetooth headsets on the market.  Whenever you are outside walking with your Iqua Sun in your ear, it will charge off direct and indirect sunlight!  This makes the Iqua Sun an ideal Bluetooth headset for active outdoors enthusiasts who need to remain connected even when they are out in the elements.  For use at night, inside, or other dark environments, the Iqua Sun falls back on a Lithium Polymer battery that has a 9 hour talk capacity.  By the time you exhaust the battery, the sun will be back up to recharge it!

Because Iqua designed the Sun for substance more than style, the Iqua Sun Bluetooth Headset has very easy-to-use controls.  Outfitted with only a volume control toggle and call button, the Iqua Sun is one of the least complicated to operate Bluetooth headsets on the market.  At only twelve grams, the Sun is very light in your ear, making it one of the most comfortable Bluetooth headsets as well.

The Iqua Sun operates on any Bluetooth-compatible device that uses Handsfree 1.5 and Headset 1.1.  In addition to having the impressive solar power function, the Iqua Sun has a decent range.  You may pair the Iqua Sun with up to eight different hands-free, one at a time. The Sun remains connected to its device even when your phone, smartphone or other hands-free device is up to ten meters away.

The Iqua Sun Bluetooth Headset is a very cool Bluetooth headset that is ideal for those who like both being outdoors and having access to their gadgets.

Quite Possibly The Best Online Dieting Tool, Calorie Count

With the holidays behind us and the new year nicely underway, many of us are looking for a way to take off the holiday pounds.  Technology exists to aid you in weight loss.  There are specialized computer devices that help you count calories as well as smartphone applications designed to help you plan your diet and exercise regimen.  Arguably the best is Calorie Count.

Calorie Count is a comprehensive website that helps you to lose weight in a healthy fashion.  The site functions as an informative tool, an online journal and a social network.  The three primary functions of the site come together for the user to provide a powerful weight loss tool that offers you the best chance for a healthier lifestyle.  Calorie Count helps users lose weight by keeping you focused on your specific weight loss goals while rewarding your accomplishments.

The informative nature of Calorie Count is unparalleled on the Internet.  Calorie Count offers you over 231,000 foods with their entire nutritional breakdown so you may see the exact impact of every food you eat.  The truly valuable aspect of Calorie Count’s extensive database of nutritional information is that it allows you to log and chart each day along every possible vector.  In simpler terms, the Calorie Count tool allows you research every meal, drink and snack you want to put into your body and the program provides you with custom graphs exactly what you are consuming.  If you need to eat more protein, for example, you can tweak your meals until you find the right balanced food that will provide you with the protein you are lacking without pushing you above the recommended daily allowance of other nutritional elements.  Because users are able to add information, this database is constantly expanding!

The nutritional breakdown tool is a powerful one, but it works best when synergized with Calorie Count’s online journal.  When you create a Calorie Count account, you have the option to start an online journal.  Take that opportunity!  You can keep your journal private, but Calorie Count’s online journal is a day by day, meal by meal record of your journey to weight loss.  After you enter all of your medical data, Calorie Count uses your journal to calculate not only all you take in, but how many calories you burn through every activity you perform throughout the day.  Using the journal function, Calorie Count provides you with recommendations on how best to exercise for your body type and health concerns!

Finally, at least for the space we have here, there is a social network function to Calorie Count.  Calorie Count connects you with other people who are trying to lose weight, so you may provide support, ask questions and share your triumphs for positive reinforcement.  Even better, nutritional experts are available on the site to help you meet your goals.

Losing weight is never easy; Calorie Count is a powerful weight loss tool that requires diligence, but provides all you need to lose weight!

Lose It! An App That Makes Weight Loss Hip!

Entering a new year is traditionally a time of introspection, which is why so many of us make New Year’s resolutions to try to change parts of ourselves and our lives with which we are unhappy.  One of the most common New Year’s resolutions that people fail to achieve is to lose weight and keep it off.  Lose It! may help you lose weight and stick to a program if you have found it challenging to lose weight in the past.

Lose It! is an interactive weight loss website and now an application for smartphones.  Lose It! helps you monitor your diet and exercise and achieve specific weight loss goals that you set for yourself.  Unlike specialized computer devices designed for weight loss, Lose It! is a comprehensive software application that includes both personal weight loss plans and a community component.

Lose It! is a blend of a computerized weight loss journal and a social network centered on losing weight.  You may access Lose It! through the Internet or through the LoseIt! app on your Apple iPhone or iPod Touch.  Once there, you will discover that LoseIt! is an all-encompassing weight loss solution.

First, LoseIt! helps you manage your weight by creating specific weight loss goals that you record within your profile.  Your profile is more like a medical file than like a profile on other social networking sites.  As a result, your profile through your LoseIt! account includes your weight loss goals, any medical conditions you need the program to take into account and your journal.  The journal function of LoseIt! is the cornerstone to using LoseIt! to lose weight.  There, you record each and every item you eat, ideally right before you consume it.  LoseIt! then factors the caloric intake of what you are eating and calculates the amount of calories you may consume for the remainder of the day.

To get the most out of LoseIt!, you have to be very vigilant with your journal records and you have to not be shamed by your computer.  Interfacing with a computer program instead of a human being may prompt you to be more realistic about both your achievements and your progress if you are serious about your weight loss goal.  Each time you exercise, you must update your LoseIt! journal as well.  By keeping accurate records and following the suggestions LoseIt makes – like “stop eating for the day!” – you have a much better chance of achieving your weight loss goal.

LoseIt! also maximizes your chance of weight loss success through its social network capability.  Because weight loss goals are so common and the challenges to losing weight are shared by so many people, LoseIt! helps dieters to network.  Through LoseIt!’s chat functions and bulletin boards, you may exchange recipes, discuss issues and make goals with other dieters.

LoseIt! truly incorporates computers and smartphones into your plan to lose weight.

The Viral Videos Worth Remembering!

Social development seldom keeps pace with the creation and spread of new technologies.  As we become smarter and more technologically adept, there have been no significant social movements that incorporate developing the human mind in a similar fashion.  Nowhere is the disparity between emerging technologies and stagnant sociological development more clear than on the Internet.  The proliferation of high-speed transfer devices in combination with immense online data storage depots in the hands of people who are often immature has led to the rise of viral Internet videos.

Never before have so many people shared so many ridiculous, pointless or disturbing images as they have within the past five years.  But for every traumatic Internet video phenomenon, there has been a gem that is worth recalling (or experiencing if you haven’t yet).  Some of the most noteworthy (and safe for work!) viral video phenomena include:

Diet Coke And Mentos Eruption.  This viral video was a remarkably simple one wherein Mentos candies were dropped into a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke.  The result was a foaming geyser caught on video that fascinated Internet video watchers in 2006.  Debate over the video’s authenticity persisted until Mythbusters illustrated the reaction.  Now, the video remains a pretty cool bit of footage.

“Debbie’s” eHarmony Video.  Rather hilariously, this seemingly-normal eHarmony dating video takes a turn for the funny when the woman describing herself breaks into tears while discussing her love of cats.  If you haven’t seen this, it is surreal and the type of uncomfortable humor that it is almost impossible to sit through with a straight face.  Even cat lovers will laugh at “Debbie” as she cries over how great she thinks cats are.

The Star Wars Kid.  It is hard not to appreciate the teenager from Quebec whose video of himself pretending to be a Jedi leaked onto the Internet.  The boy uses a golf ball retriever as if it was a lightsaber and hurls himself around as if he was in Star Wars.  This viral video became so popular that parodies of it appeared on Arrested Development and American Dad!  With millions of hits, the Star Wars kid video reassures us that it is cool to play and, when taken out of context, people look ridiculous playing.

Sam And Ren Have A Conversation.  There is a somewhat timeless quality to the video of the two seventeen-month old twins conversing with one another in their own fictional language.  The viral video had thousands of views after it appeared on YouTube and remains popular there today.

Amid thousands of ridiculous, pointless or disturbing video clips that users upload to the Internet, few become a real phenomenon that attracts real attention.  Fortunately, time weeds out the disgusting or less funny ones and leaves viewers with some enduringly interesting online videos.

The Cult of Apple – Part 2: We Are Family

The first blog in this series on Apple’s success at creating an increasingly strong global following—an obsession—discussed how Apple consumers are able to establish a unique social identity by identifying themselves with Apple products. IPads, iPhones, iPods, MacBooks are all means to stand out in a positive way, to belong to a family. So aside from wanting to establish an individual identity, Apple users are able to establish a familial, group identity. The products aren’t merely a way for their owners to create custom app collections; they’re the small connection that suddenly links you to a huge, wealthy, and powerful family—the Apples.

Indeed, once a member of this family, company events become family reunions; corporate announcements become a source of pride; and family reputation becomes a matter of personal responsibility. Likewise, celebrating the arrival of a new iPhone for the members of the Apple family is like celebrating the birth of a new sibling or relative. The days that lead up to an Apple product debut are just as—if not more—exciting than the countdown to Christmas or summer vacation or election day.

Of course, the people at Apple are no fools; they know that their customers/relatives have a special relationship with the company and its products, and make good use of that knowledge. Perhaps this kind of relationship between the company and consumers is why Apple users as so patient in awaiting remedial tech support, as was the case with Siri and battery problems with the iPhone 4S and the antenna problems with its predecessor.

The strength of the bonds in this particular family is such that Apple users are aggressively loyal to the brand name. Again, though this may be due to other factors like the products’ reliability and limited need for computer repairs, or as previously discussed, identity formation, it is also largely due to the sense of belonging. Which is why you’ll often notice (or know from experience) that owning one Apple device usually leads to owning several others. One obstacle to this trend might be the expensive nature of such a commitment, but even with that, Apple loyalists are constantly on a quest to rid themselves of their un-Apple-like devices and make the full transformation. Naturally, the folks at Apple know this and are more than happy with it.

Ultimately, belonging to a family, albeit a technological one, isn’t a bad thing. It certainly works well for Apple’s wallet.

The series’ next blog will depart from discussing the socio-psycho dimension of Apple’s success and turn temporarily to discussing Apple’s technology.

Flight Made Cool And Safe: ADS-B Is Coming!

One of the coolest products in the world is not one that will be available directly to consumers, but it will benefit everyone who travels by plane.  The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast is that cool product and it is making air travel much safer than it ever has been.

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, the woeful state of air traffic technology became public knowledge.  For the first time, most people in the United States learned that most of the computer systems that monitored and regulated air traffic control were from the 1950s!  The last vacuum tube computers were mass produced in 1962, yet the airline industry continued to use those outdated computers.  In 2003, the United States Congress established the Joint Planning and Development Office to revamp the outdated technologies the air traffic industry has been using.  The JPDO proposed NextGen and the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system is an integral part of that initiative.

The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system is an innovative tool that works much like GPS.  The ADS-B system keeps track of each and every plane outfitted with the system.  One impressive leap forward that the ADS-B system makes is that the display for the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast includes images of both planes in the air and on the ground.  Because the ADS-B system monitors planes still in the terminal, it will help prevent runway conflicts.  The other important leap forward that ADS-B includes is an interface that is universal.  Unlike previous, radar-based systems that showed air traffic controllers only the airspace around their terminal, with plane positions relative to them, the ADS-B provides universal displays.  This means that your departure airport, your destination airport and every airport in between has access to the exact same images and the same training to know how to properly interpret it! The ADS-B comes in two parts, the ADS-B In and the ADS-B Out.

The ADS-B In is a receiver.  The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system is a satellite-based network that monitors weather information, geographical locations on the ground and ADS-B Out transmitters.  In many ways, the ADS-B system is an airborne computer network, specifically designed for aviation.  The ADS-B In system is what pilots use to access the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system.  Using ADS-B In, the pilot receives weather information, telemetry on other planes and guidance information.

The ADS-B Out is the transmitter.  The ADS-B Out is like a combination of GPS and the plane’s black box.  The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Out system transmits all data about the plane and flight from the equipped plane to the ADS-B satellite network.

Australia is, to date, the only nation that has fully upgraded entirely to ADS-B technology.  The United States is overhauling its aviation industry and by 2020, the intent is that the United States will be entirely on the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system.  Finally, the aviation industry is getting out of the 1950s and into the 21rst Century!

Interfolio: Technology Solutions for Grad School Applicants

For students and professionals getting ready to apply for academic jobs or graduate programs, December is an especially hectic time of the year because it marks the arrival of those dreaded deadlines. Applying for graduate school is a long and tiring process that often involves endless hours of putting applications together. This includes preparing and writing admission essays and personal statements, customizing writing samples, battling with ETS over test score deliveries, and requesting and sending out letters of recommendation. If you’re getting ready for some big January deadlines or know a friend or family member who’s going crazy juggling applications, take a look at Interfolio—an online resource that makes the application process considerably less dangerous to your mental health.

Interfolio is an online system that stores supplementary application materials and sends them out for you. For example, instead of relying on professors to send out recommendations to a dozen or more schools, using your Interfolio account you ask them to upload their confidential letters to your account where it’s stored. Then, in place of entering a recommender’s email address in an application, you simply enter a code that Interfolio generates. Next, Interfolio receives the request and sends out the letter for you. Of course all this happens for the modest fee of $6 per letter per school (+1$ for each additional letter). So for example, if you send four letters to UCLA, the total cost for electronic delivery would be $9 (6+1+1+1).

If you’re worried about the credibility of letters sent by Interfolio because of Internet security concerns or similar privacy issues, rest assured, Interfolio is secure and keeps your letters confidential. Besides, most schools are already familiar with the service and know what to expect.

Interfolio is also idea for sending other documents like resumes, writing samples, or portfolios for job applications. Those preparing for a career in teaching will find the service very useful, as it allows you to collect and save letters of recommendation from employers or site-supervisors before they forget you.

The service offers a variety of different accounts from which to choose, and they’re all priced very reasonably. Additionally, Interfolio offers several options for delivering the material to colleges or potential employers such as online deliveries (which are the fastest) and many ground-shipping options. Many of these, in turn, come with real time tracking and FedEx online tech support.

Documents you upload to your account are stored for five years, even when your account expires! Along with the simple and user-friendly interface, Interfolio has wonderful and accommodating customer service. When you need documents rushed, the service crew is always understanding and ready to help. So make your application process a little less stressful with this amazing service or refer a friend to Interfolio.

Apple And BMW Are The Only Recognizable Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Supporters.

As anyone who has gone to the movies lately knows, product placement within movies has exploded in the last few years.  It is little surprise, then, that the forthcoming blockbuster Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol utilizes product placement in its advertising.  What is most striking in the trailers for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, however, is how few of the products are actually identifiable.

Both of the major trailers feature a device that looks like an iPod Touch.  However, the Apple logo is not visible and for those who look closely at such things, the controls are different.  Is Apple hoping the iPod Touch is such an instantly recognizable item in the public mind that viewers will not notice when the device on screen is not actually an iPod Touch?  Or is one of Apple’s competitors making one of the least successful product-placement bids of all time?

From the trailers, though, there are two very cool products that are clearly identifiable: the MacBook Air and the BMW i8 Concept car.

In the latest trailer, a thin, Mac laptop may be seen for several seconds.  When Ethan Hunt needs computer support he just calls Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn who delivers it on the MacBook Air.  Those who want to emulate the Impossible Missions team, though, may have to wait; the Apple website does not have the MacBook Air available in black, as it appears in the trailer.

BMW is investing big with its use of the BMW i8.  The vehicle with the distinct doors that rotate up appears prominently in the new trailer, which makes it easy to mistake it for a car commercial when flipping channels.  Mission: Impossible fans will not be able to purchase this hybrid concept car until 2014.  At that time, Mission: Impossible fans with an extra $175,000 (rumored) to spend will be able to drive like Ethan Hunt.  The rest of us will just have to gawk at it in the movie.

Ironically, the most-featured device is a giant touchscreen computer that appears in all of the trailers.  The display with distinctive handles and controls does not feature any brand names or logos and looks like a massive tablet computer.  The device is featured prominently in the advertising campaign for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, but what company is promoting it remains a mystery.

One might expect Ethan Hunt to have tech gear that is custom made for him, but reason takes a back seat to commercialism for some of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
