“Buzzwords” are very popular in the tech industry, but these often vague and uninformative terms are not always clear to consumers. One of these terms is “the cloud,” one that everyone knows but of which fewer can explain the particulars. To put it simply, it refers to software and services that operate on the Internet rather than your computer, which you can access in a browser like Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Google Chrome as well as some dedicated mobile apps. When your data is in the cloud, or you work in the cloud, that data goes somewhere for storage. In the case of the cloud, is goes to numerous locations from which a network of servers can find and deliver it when needed. Portability was a revolution in computer file storage, initially in the form of floppy discs and CDs. The release of flash drives in 2000 was another revolution in file storage that went even beyond those methods. Flash drives offered the same storage, data backup, and file transfer capabilities but with far more capacity and more portability. Having no moving parts, they were also more durable, and surface scratches could no longer damage the data stored on them. They offered a much less volatile, safer medium for storage on which people could more easily add, erase, and reprogram the data on it. Flash drives are easily removable, rewritable, and even more portable than ever before, fitting easily in a pocket and weighing less than one ounce. Every desktop and laptop now has USB ports, and now some mobile devices can also utilize them using special adapters. The SanDisk iXpand, however, is a step beyond most flash drives and allows for uniquely simple mobile device data storage working on the same principles upon which the technology always has. It works by matching local homeowners who have unused storage space in their garage, attic, basement, or any other property they own with people who need storage space. Essentially, RovingBox has created a shared marketplace that enables people to mutually benefit each other when the need arises. Read more »

Storage can be a serious pain. Whether it’s because someone is a college student and constantly moving back and forth between school and home, or because someone has recently moved to a smaller home in a new city on temporary basis, finding adequate storage options that are affordable and convenient is often difficult. Storage centers often end up in remote areas due to the required space, and it is not always simple to retrieve stored material from them. This reality is why so many people choose to have friends or relatives hold items for them if they live close by to the area. It’s easy to pick something up stored in a garage. Now, there is a cool product named StowThat that depends on a business model where anyone with convenient, extra storage space can rent that space to those who want to avoid traditional storage units.
