Saving The United States One Business At A Time: Lynn Tilton!

The business world continues to be mostly male-dominated.  Even as social conventions have changed, the business world has adapted less quickly than others, even in emerging markets.  Many new giants in the marketplace like Twitter, for example, have no women on their Boards of Directors.  The long odds of running a multibillion dollar company never intimidated Lynn Tilton, though!

Lynn Tilton is a pioneering businesswoman who is the CEO of Patriarch Partners.  Patriarch Partners is an umbrella company that invests in and takes over failing businesses in the United States.  Tilton searches for companies that have good ideas and good products, but are failing in the marketplace.  With Patriarch Partners, she invests heavily – usually becoming a dominant shareholder in the company – in the failing company and restructures it to make it profitable.  Companies that Patriarch Partners has rescued from the oblivion of bankruptcy include Arizona Iced Tea, Performance Design Products, Rand McNally (yes, the famous map company!) and MD Helicopters.

While usually an outsider coming in to “restructure” a company is cause for grave concern, Lynn Tilton does not operate like the stereotypical corporate investor.  Instead, Tilton has two very simple philosophies.  The first guiding principle she uses to run Patriarch Partners is that social responsibility is not antithetic to having a profitable company.  Working hand in hand with that idea comes her absolute belief in the importance of preserving jobs, especially manufacturing jobs, in the United States.  With saving American jobs and making U.S. companies profitable as her guiding principles, Tilton and Patriarch Partners have spent ten years saving 150 companies and an estimate quarter of a million U.S. jobs!

Lynn Tilton’s story is, in many ways, a classic “rags to riches” story.  While many doors were opened to her as a teenager when she became a nationally ranked tennis player, she pursued her education at Yale where she graduated with a B.A. in American Studies.  While attending Columbia Business School, she worked for Goldman Sachs and received a practical education in corporate finance.  When her marriage fell apart leaving her as a single mother, Lynn Tilton did not lose sight of her professional goals.  Instead, she completed her education, worked one hundred hours a week and provided for her daughter.  In that time, she became an expert on distressed debt and developed the philosophies that would allow her to create Patriarch Partners in 2000.

Many traditional powerhouses in the business world have begrudged Lynn Tilton for her untraditional, yet successful, approach to protecting and restoring American manufacturing.  But as those old guard businessmen layoff, outsource, or fire workers, and cash in huge bonuses while their companies illustrate less long-term viability, Tilton is helping to save the United States from economic collapse.  With Patriarch Partners and Lynn Tilton as the new models for successful enterprises in the U.S., workers here will thunderously cheer, “Out with the old; in with the new!”

Cool Product Of Yesteryear: Victorinox Apple Swiss Army Knife!

Sometimes the neatest things take a while to appreciate.  What is cheap advertising propaganda one year might become a sought-after collectible decades later.  Like most businesses, Apple Computers has had its commercial surges.  During the lean years, of course, the “Apple culture” becomes less trendy and merchandising around the brand seems tackier.  But with the success of Apple Computers from the iPods, iPads and iPhones, Apple swag from years gone by is once again hip.  One of the coolest pieces of Apple-related merchandise is the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife with Apple logo!

Victorinox is the official company that makes Swiss Army Knives.  Actually, they are the only one who makes legitimate Swiss Army Knives; all other companies make “pen knives.”  As anyone who has ever had a Swiss Army Knife (or any other pen knife) can attest, there are thousands of situations when it is a handy tool to have.  Back in the early 1980s, Victorinox partnered with Apple Computers to release an Apple Computers Swiss Army Knife!  You may find the Apple Swiss Army Knife fairly easily online in the traditional red or a bright blue color.  The fundamental difference between Victorinox’s Apple knife and the traditional Swiss Army Knife is that the Swiss cross on the standard Swiss Army Knife has been replaced by the Apple Computers apple logo on the limited edition knife.

The Apple Swiss Army Knife comes with standard tools, no matter what the knife’s handle color.  Each Apple Swiss Army Knife comes with scissors, a nail file, a small blade and tweezers.  If you are buying your Apple knife on the secondary market, be sure to check the spring on the scissors.  The thin metal spring on the scissors of Swiss Army Knives from the ‘80s wore out comparatively quickly and if the spring is worn or missing from the knife you are buying, the price should reflect that.  Victorinox produced a classy metal gift box for the Apple knife, so you may safely transport or display your vintage Apple knife.

A lot has changed since the early ‘80s, but Apple is even cooler now than it was then.  As a result, tracking down one of the vintage Victorinox Apple Swiss Army Knives can make for a very cool gift for Apple enthusiasts now.  Just do not try to get on a plane with this handy tool!

Bringing Etiquette To The Internet: Daniel Post Senning!

The name “Emily Post” is synonymous with “etiquette” the whole world around.  But few people stop to consider that Emily Post was the name in etiquette for most of our grandparents . . . how is it she still dictates the rules of society after almost ninety years?  The answer, of course, is that Emily Post, the original author of Etiquette: The Blue Book of Social Usage, does not; others continue to use her name.  Since 1946, etiquette has been dictated in Emily Post’s name from The Emily Post Institute.  The great-grand and great-great-grandchildren of Emily Post currently run The Emily Post Institute.  The member of the Emily Post Institute that is making etiquette most accessible to the current generation is Daniel Post Senning.

Daniel Post Senning is the great-great-grandson of Emily Post and he carries on her legacy still at the Emily Post Institute.  As the Manager of Web Development and Online Content, Daniel Post Senning is responsible for bringing the Emily Post Institute into the 21st Century.  While being born into the Post Dynasty might have gotten Daniel Post Senning his start, it was his ambition and technical acumen that made him into such a great asset for the Institute.  As a graduate of Pomona College with a B.S. in Molecular Biology, Daniel Post Senning had many doors open up to him.  He chose to return to the Emily Post Institute to ensure that the Institute would remain relevant in these turbulent times.

As Manager of Web Development and Online Content, Daniel Post Senning designed and brought online the Emily Post Institute’s robust website.  The cornerstone of the new website is the etipedia, which is an encyclopedia of etiquette articles available for free on the Internet.  Daniel Post Senning designed the etipedia with a robust search engine so that users could find articles fast and easily.  The ease-of-use of the etipedia has made it an indispensible online tool for journalists as well as citizens searching for etiquette information.

Not content to simply design the website and establish the Emily Post Institute as the leading online source for etiquette articles, Daniel Post Senning is also a significant content contributor to the website.  Daniel Post Senning writes extensively about etiquette on the Internet and he is responsible for the Facebook and Twitter content from the Emily Post Institute.  As a content provider for the Emily Post Institute website, Daniel Post Senning hosts one of the most dynamic features on the site; his video blog!  With his performer’s personality and wit, Daniel Post Senning frequently updates the Institute’s website with interviews and presentations that are as entertaining as they are informative.

Proper etiquette is never passé and Daniel Post Senning is ensuring that the Emily Post Institute remains relevant to teach etiquette lessons to the next generation!

The NPD Group Needs A New Methodology

Virtually anyone can manipulate statistics in so many different ways that it is sometimes funny what passes for news using statistics.  As the annual Consumer Electronics Show launched in Las Vegas this year, the NPD Group (formerly National Purchase Diary Group) came out with what appeared to be ominous financial statistics for the technology sector.  This was treated as potentially devastating news among many members of the technology press, most of whom were off covering the Consumer Electronics Show.

Is it possible the technology reporters and bloggers did not actually read the NPD report?  Is it possible that the mainstream media that picked up the story did not understand it?  Either way, the tech sector ought not to be reeling from the NPD Group’s assertion that holiday consumer electronics spending dropped six percent during the holiday shopping season in 2011.

This would actually be news . . . if it were true.

The NPD Group’s methodology in determining that consumer electronics sales dropped is a flawed one.  In fact, they use methodology so flawed as to make the results meaningless.  The NPD report states that total consumer technology sales “excluding cell phones, tablets, e-readers, and video games” dropped.  What?!  Why is anyone taking the report seriously when it excludes some of the biggest consumer spending items of the holiday season?!  Every major poll in every single respectable publication put the Amazon Kindle Fire at the top of both “most wanted” and “most purchased” gift lists.  The Apple iPad was also a highly sought-after and delivered gift.

Saying that consumer electronic spending is down without including tablets, e-readers and video games, is like saying that cars are being pulled over less by police . . . when red and black cars are excluded.  Given that red and black cars comprise the greatest number of cars on the road in the United States, any statistic correlating cars and car color is worthless without including them.  So, too, is a statistic about holiday spending on consumer electronics that omits the most popular consumer electronics of the holiday season!

Why did the NPD release such a worthless statistic?  To be fair, the data is virtually impossible to come by.  Amazon is notoriously tight-lipped about how many of its e-readers have sold, and, with the Kindle Fire, they have been characteristically opaque.  Apple is also less eager to release its sales figures on tablet computers, though it is widely predicted that when you consider tablets a personal computers, Apple is now the largest PC manufacturer on Earth.

Regardless of what the NPD wants consumers to think, ten days in the 2011 holiday shopping season saw billion dollar sales, which is more than any other holiday season ever before.  To think that consumer electronics like tablets, e-readers and video games did not contribute tremendously to that is naïve.

Mobile Commons: The Short Message Service Of The Future!

As the United States comes into another election year, political activism is once more on the rise.  But for those for whom politics is more than just an every-four-year event, new technologies are making their political activism more effective.  One of the relatively new technologies used by activists is the Short Message Service.  Among the various Short Message Services, Mobile Commons stands out for its effectiveness.

Mobile Commons is a marketing platform designed for smartphone users.  The Internet-based application acts as a social network that allows you to connect your smartphone to the smartphones of all of your friends.  Then, when you have an important issue that you need transmitted through your networks, the Mobile Commons application acts as a Short Message Service.  As an SMS, Mobile Commons helps transmit both messages – via the phone portion of your smartphone – and text documents to everyone with whom you have a relationship.

The benefit of the Mobile Commons application to political activists is almost self-evident.  As soon as you learn of an issue that affects the people in your network, you may inform them all simultaneously using Mobile Commons.  But as important, as a leader of a group, you may help guide the group to a specific course of action using Mobile Commons.  Using Mobile Commons, you may draft a form letter to your Representative or Senator (or any person you need to get a message to) and send it with your voice message.  As a result, within minutes of learning of a bill, news event or other political controversy, you and your entire network can spread the word and tell those people in power exactly what you want them to do!

Mobile Commons is not limited to just political activism in its usefulness as an application.  Large families may benefit from using Mobile Commons.  For example, if your large family is in the process of becoming even larger, Mobile Commons can be an invaluable tool.  You may use Mobile Commons to send everyone in your family network announcements about new births or other vital family events and attach photos of the new baby.  Using Mobile Commons, members of your family network may then spread the good news and pictures with people in their lives.

There are many applications that allow networking and sharing, but Mobile Commons puts it together in a very effective, easy-to-use platform that has a proven record of success.  That makes Mobile Connect very cool for activists and genuinely social people.

Using Technology To Keep Politics Clean, Sheila Krumholz Helped Build OpenSecrets.org!

The Internet may well be the last frontier in the United States, if not the world.  After all, the Internet has almost singlehandedly made the word “pioneer” relevant again.  Much of the pioneering spirit embodied by the Internet comes in the form of trailblazers who simply took something tedious in the real world and made it simple, cool, or relevant, in the digital universe of the Internet.  Sheila Krumholz is one such Internet pioneer.

Sheila Krumholz is the Executive Director of the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan political watchdog organization.  Krumholz is responsible for transforming the tedious Open Secrets book of records to OpenSecrets.org, one of the most flexible, insightful and accurate political websites on the Internet.  OpenSecrets.org is, by and large, an online database of campaign contribution records for every United States Federal election from 1990 until now!

At the University of Minnesota, Krumholz studied international relations and political science.  What seemed to interest her most, however, was the strong relationship between money and politics.  While studying politics, she began researching.  This research took her to Washington, D.C. where she rapidly immersed herself in the filing cabinets of Congress.  Hired by the Center for Responsive Politics, she poured through every campaign finance record she could find to trace exactly what corporations were influencing each politician at the national level.  Krumholz would probably still be digging away in dusty basements had she not developed OpenSecrets.org.

As the scale of presidential and congressional elections in the United States became financially unwieldy, Krumholz saw a potential niche on the Internet that was missing.  She saw that the Internet was giving everyone who had a political opinion a chance to raise their voice, but that there was a severe shortage of facts and archives for retrieving facts on campaign finance.  Krumholz led the team that made the vast database of Federal Election Commission donation records available to anyone who was connected to the Internet.  She conceived of OpenSecrets.org as a resource for all citizens. Krumholz wanted to make the site into more than just a simple page about the Center for Responsive Politics.  With her vision, that is what the site became!

Krumholz is a patriot as much as she is a pioneer.  Serving now as the Executive Director of the Center for Responsive Politics, her role is much less technical than it was for the years while she was helping to develop the award-winning website.  While she remains deeply interested in the statistical analysis tools OpenSecrets.org continues to develop, her day to day concerns involve fighting for campaign finance reform.  An expert on the subject, Krumholz and the Center for Responsive Politics are exceptionally careful to not endorse any specific plan for campaign finance reform while continually educating citizens and politicians on the inarguable links between campaign donations and political actions in Washington.

Sheila Krumholz effectively blazed a trail using the freedom the Internet provides to help educate every United States citizen on the inner workings of the federal government!

Facebook Applications That Use Your Friends’ Photos!

Despite its faults with repeatedly recommending the same hundred people to be your friend, Facebook remains a very cool social network.  Facebook is a social network where you can communicate with friends far and near and even people you just wish were your friends, all at once.  The social network that Mark Zuckerberg founded on the concept of exclusivity is now a universally-recognized facet of United States popular culture.  One of the nice elements of Facebook is that it serves as a platform for applications that do not take Facebook all that seriously.  Two of the coolest such applications are Face-Invaders and the Photo Booth Friends video slot machine.

Face-Invaders is a very simple application for Facebook.  The Face-Invaders game is a recreation of the classic 1980s video game Space Invaders.  The difference, though, is that instead of generic aliens, the creatures descending from the sky are made up of Facebook photos of your Facebook friends!  You use your own Facebook photo in Face-Invaders as the defensive weapon to save the world.

The game is very simple to play, just as Space Invaders was.  As your friends float down from the sky, you shoot them until the rows of friends are all gone.  Moving your avatar is easy, as you simply tilt your tablet computer or smartphone in the direction you want to go. To fire your weapon, you simply tap your portable device’s screen.  Face-Invaders can be a nice cathartic tool when people you are friends with on Facebook have annoyed you in real life!

For a more positive spin on using your Facebook friends’ photos, the DoubleDown Casino application on Facebook has Photo Booth FriendsPhoto Booth Friends is a standard video slot machine on Facebook, except that all of the symbols are profile photos from your Facebook friends.  Photo Booth Friends is a cool application in that you may let the program choose which friends it represents in the game or you may associate specific friends with different winning values.  Suddenly, your loved one may help you win big at the virtual casino!

Photo Booth Friends is otherwise a very typical video slot machine on the DoubleDown Casino platform.  Photo Booth Friends is a twenty-line video slot machine with eleven different symbols, including Bonus Game and Scatter symbols.  The bonus game for Photo Booth Friends is the aptly-named “snapshot bonus” that makes further use out of your friends’ Facebook photos.

Facebook profile photos can be fun or troubling, but with applications like Face-Invaders and Photo Booth Friends, you can see a lot more of your friends while gaming on Facebook!

Tom Gerhardt, Half Of Studio Neat!

The relationship between art and commerce has only been made more complicated by the rise of the Internet.  On the one hand, artists now are able to present their works to a vastly broader audience and entire sites like Art.net have sprouted up to use the Internet to promote art in all of its forms.  On the flip side, with so many more people exploring and presenting artwork, the market has been flooded and many artist sites are choking with starving artists, none of whom are buying.  As well, the lack of real safeguards for images and representations of artwork on the Internet makes it much more difficult to protect the intellectual property of artists.  One artist who has effectively blended artwork and emerging Internet technologies is Tom Gerhardt.

Tom Gerhardt is one of the two co-founders of Studio Neat.  Studio Neat has a stated goal of designing simple accessories for popular technologies.  Lacking a corporate model or drive, Gerhardt is much more concerned with the artistic aspects of the products he designs.  Gerhardt is an idea man who makes interesting functional gadgets, but he does not prioritize selling them, which might be why you have not heard of Studio Neat.

Tom Gerhardt is a world-renowned artist, first and foremost.  Gerhardt pioneered the ring technology that makes the stone mouse work, which is very cool.  In addition to appreciating a strong sense of simplicity in design, Gerhardt is known for having a sense of whimsy.  One would have to be whimsical to design a mud-based interface for computers.  Yes, Gerhardt is spearheading the MudTub, a computer interface that works by having a computer user play in mud.  The MudTub might be for a niche audience of people who want to move around in wet dirt, but the fact that someone had the idea to manipulate computer devices using playing in mud is a remarkably clever one.

Gerhardt and his partner at Studio Neat, Dan Provost, recently designed the Glif.  The Glif is a mount and stand for use with the Apple iPhone 4 and 4S and Gerhardt appealed to Apple fans online to actually fund its production.  The Glif is a very simple black mount with a threaded screw hole that allows you to attach your Apple iPhone 4 to any standard camera mount!  The simplicity of the idea is incredible; Apple promoted the iPhone 4 on its photographic abilities without ever producing a device that would allow it to be attached to other, existing digital camera accessories!  Gerhardt saw the need and created an inexpensive, simple device that met the need in a stylish way.

With creations like the stone mouse, Glif, and MudTub under his belt or in development, artist Tom Gerhardt is someone to watch for the next great fusion of art and technology!

The Iqua 603 Sun Bluetooth Headset: Solar Powered Phoning!

With more and more states adopting hands free laws and the National Traffic Safety Board issuing an advisory to Congress that no electronic devices should be used while driving, Bluetooth technology is becoming more important than ever.  With so many different Bluetooth headsets on the market, it can be difficult to determine which Bluetooth headset is the right one for you.  One of the best on the market, especially for those who are environmentally conscientious, is the Iqua 603 Sun Bluetooth headset.

The Iqua Sun is a discrete Bluetooth headset that does not call much attention to itself.  With its muted black shell and earbud-style design, the Iqua Sun is not as flashy as many Bluetooth headsets.  The fact that the Iqua Sun does not sparkle or try to impress users with its simple appearance is not a good reason to disregard this very cool Bluetooth headset.  This Bluetooth has substance and it comes in the form of its solar powered battery.

The Iqua Sun is solar powered, which makes it one of the most environmentally-responsible Bluetooth headsets on the market.  Whenever you are outside walking with your Iqua Sun in your ear, it will charge off direct and indirect sunlight!  This makes the Iqua Sun an ideal Bluetooth headset for active outdoors enthusiasts who need to remain connected even when they are out in the elements.  For use at night, inside, or other dark environments, the Iqua Sun falls back on a Lithium Polymer battery that has a 9 hour talk capacity.  By the time you exhaust the battery, the sun will be back up to recharge it!

Because Iqua designed the Sun for substance more than style, the Iqua Sun Bluetooth Headset has very easy-to-use controls.  Outfitted with only a volume control toggle and call button, the Iqua Sun is one of the least complicated to operate Bluetooth headsets on the market.  At only twelve grams, the Sun is very light in your ear, making it one of the most comfortable Bluetooth headsets as well.

The Iqua Sun operates on any Bluetooth-compatible device that uses Handsfree 1.5 and Headset 1.1.  In addition to having the impressive solar power function, the Iqua Sun has a decent range.  You may pair the Iqua Sun with up to eight different hands-free, one at a time. The Sun remains connected to its device even when your phone, smartphone or other hands-free device is up to ten meters away.

The Iqua Sun Bluetooth Headset is a very cool Bluetooth headset that is ideal for those who like both being outdoors and having access to their gadgets.

What Do You Do When You’re Done With Google And Facebook In Dublin? Ask Otilia Otlacan!

The very popular film The Social Network chronicled the rise of Facebook, but because the movie is concerned with the origins of Facebook, many people associated with the company were not featured in the film.  One notable person who joined the Facebook family well after the events depicted in The Social Network was Otilia Otlacan.

Otilia Otlacan worked for Facebook for one year at Facebook’s Dublin offices.  As an Advertising Operations Associate, Otlacan was intimately involved with effectively branding Facebook for the UK marketplace.  Equally important, Otlacan was responsible for positioning brands like Kellogg’s, Sony, Visa and Chevrolet on Facebook in Europe.  At a time of financial instability worldwide, Otilia Otlacan was developing and executing advertising campaigns on Facebook for some of the world’s biggest companies!  As an Advertising Operations Associate, Otlacan ran advertising campaigns for Facebook that impacted markets in twenty-five counties and fifteen different languages!

How did Otilia Otlacan become such an advertising powerhouse when she only received her Master’s degree in marketing in 2003 (at age twenty-six!)?  Otlacan is a very talented professional, who seemed destined for success when she first received her certification as a Programming Languages Analyst from the Romanian Ministry Of Education.  From there, she focused her attentions on marketing throughout Europe.  For a few years, she worked for local computer and marketing companies in Romania, Athens and Dublin.

Her big break came when Google discovered Otilia Otlacan.  In 2006, Otlacan became an Advertising Account Associate for Google in Dublin.  There, she was responsible for creating the Google AdSense market for the UK.  Primarily responsible for promoting Google AdSense across the countries in Europe that had not been exposed to – or successfully integrated – Google Ads, Otlacan made Google advertisements a powerful tool for many European businesses.  Her success with Google made her very attractive to other businesses in Europe that saw how successful she was with promoting the Google advertising platform in the UK.  Otlacan left Google to help smaller companies like muzu.tv and Jolt Online Gaming improve their revenue streams through more effective advertising.  She was so effective as Jolt’s Online Marketing Manager that Facebook wooed her when they needed an Advertising Operations Associate in Dublin!

Now, Otilia Otlacan is a marketing manager for Innova Systems & Technologies and she runs her own business.  In 2008, Otlacan and Andrea Franco formed RightFit Media, which they run together.  RightFit Media is a consulting firm that helps companies effectively advertise on the Internet.  Otlacan also runs a very popular blog on online advertising, sharing her expertise with the world!

Otilia Otlacan is smart, stylish and has experience sought after by multi-billion dollar companies like Facebook and Google; but now that she is striking out on her own, her experience can help your company, too!
