There are more people in the world suffering from heart problems than ever before, and experts predict that one out of every five people over forty years old will develop heart failure. It is a custom-designed heart pump built around a powerful tiny motor mounted on a set of expandable struts. Its designers created it to help rest and heal the heart by doing two things. Firstly, it works by reducing afterload, the pressure built up in the heart after it contracts to eject blood while pumping. Secondly, it improves blood flow to vital organs. Unlike other devices that work to achieve a similar effect but involve invasive, high-risk procedures, Aortix is small enough for use without surgery and with much less risk.
