Why Wikipedia Should Be Praised for the Blackout

Today, Wikipedia is dark in the United States.  While Wikipedia users have been subject to pleas for money and frequently unsupported articles, this is the first time Wikipedia has ever made an overtly political move.  Wikipedia is the highest profile Internet site participating in the online protest against SOPA.  Yesterday, Alexa had Wikipedia rated as the sixth most popular website in the world.  Participation in the Internet protest against SOPA is elevated by Wikipedia’s participation.

Bravo to Wikipedia!

For those unfamiliar with the issue, the Stop Online Piracy Act is a bill the United States Senate is currently debating.  It is the Senate equivalent of the House’s Protect IP Act.  The stated goal of SOPA is to protect the intellectual property of those who use the Internet for advertising and media distribution.  Critics of SOPA and PIPA argue that the methods written into the bills range from dramatic overkill – the ability for the United States Federal Government to seize servers that pirated materials pass through – to utterly ineffective, i.e. the attempt for the U.S. to moderate a worldwide network like the Internet.  Even many of SOPA and PIPAs supporters are queasy or unclear about what the law, if executed, would actually mean for Freedom Of Speech.

Wikipedia is obstructing all access to its site today as part of a protest against SOPA and PIPA.  The metaphor is an apt one and the educational potential is incredible.  Of course, Wikipedia’s blacking out the site is meant to illustrate that should Congress pass SOPA, sites like Wikipedia could be shut down abruptly and with much less respect than the protest did (users were notified over a day in advance that Wikipedia would be participating).  For those not hip to the issue, visiting Wikipedia today and discovering it dark affords Wikipedia the unparalleled ability to educate its users.  By providing users with information as to what SOPA proposes Wikipedia might just wake up the sleeping giant that is the American electorate.

While some might argue that it is inappropriate for Wikipedia to stage such a protest, the Wikimedia Foundation’s statement on the subject is remarkably articulate.  There, the site’s controlling board point out that, making SOPA into law would dramatically impact Wikipedia and that, because the site is not beholden to stockholders, they ought to raise their voice.  With ironclad logic like that it seems particularly cowardly that Facebook, the #2 site on the Internet, did not participate as well.  As a haven for even the most banal free speech, the passage of SOPA would certainly affect Facebook as well.

At this point, SOPA is virtually dead in the Senate and President Obama has done everything but explicitly state that he will veto SOPA should it reach his desk.  Too often, though, we look at history and wonder why people did not speak up while sweeping changes robbed citizens of their lives, liberties or property.  Today, Wikipedia stands up and the Internet is better for it.

More Than A Studio Exec, Sue Kroll Promotes New Technologies!

Marketing used to be a far more limited industry before the Internet.  With the rise of viral videos, the release of a movie trailer on the Internet can become a phenomenon in and of itself.  Viral marketing campaigns on the Internet have been known to make obscure movies with little potential appeal into cultural phenomena.  No one seems to understand the role of changing technologies in promoting films than Sue Kroll.

Sue Kroll is the President of Worldwide Marketing for Warner Bros. Pictures.  She has held the role since January 2008, when the position was created for her.  Prior to 2008, Sue Kroll served as Warner Bros. President of the International Marketing Division, a post she assumed in 2000.  The change in title is hardly just a semantic one; Kroll’s successes at promoting Warner Bros. films internationally led to the breakdown in barriers between the domestic and international divisions at Warner Bros!  By combining the domestic and international divisions into a worldwide marketing team, Kroll has rebranded Warner Bros. movies throughout the world.  That new, consistent, message has resonated with moviegoers around the world as her efforts made international phenomena out of the Harry Potter film saga, The Matrix sequels and the Oceans franchise!

Kroll rose through the ranks at Warner Bros. after working for Viacom and Turner Broadcasting.  While working for Turner Broadcasting, she was responsible for bringing TNT and the Cartoon Network to Europe.  One need only consider EuroDisney to know that not every American idea takes root overseas, but with Kroll’s guidance and market savvy, she literally built the Turner Broadcasting network in Europe!

Internet Music Phenomenon Worth Recalling.

The Internet has many redeeming qualities when it comes to the spread of information, news and cultural phenomenon.  It also is the repository of so much data, videos and music that it has a way of bringing out the dark side of human nature.  Joseph Conrad called that instinct the “fascination with the abomination” and that phenomenon is alive and well on the Internet.  In fact, with the way music spreads virally over the Internet, music fads represent some of the greatest modern examples of “fascination with the abomination.”

The Internet is an important tool for the music industry.  But while the music industry works hard to promote talent, underground communities with an affinity for music and the esoteric have made the Internet a place where some of the strangest music ever can become a phenomenon.  Just as William Hung managed to score a recording contract by getting a cult following after a terrible American Idol audition, so too do others find a strange success in being terrible when their music is presented online.  Here are some of the most notable:

One of the earliest weird musical Internet breakouts was the Buckwheat Boyz.  Long after the band itself disbanded, the Buckwheat Boyz became an Internet phenomenon when their song “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” (which mostly consists of those four words repeated over and over again to music) appeared as accompaniment in a Flash video with a dancing banana.  The phenomenon became an allusion on Family Guy!  There have been two toys based upon Brian in his banana costume, one of which is one of the most sought-after Family Guy action figures!

Sometimes, the weird phenomenons propagate themselves, like the Hampster Dance.  The Hampster Dance started as a single website page that featured animated hamsters and other rodents dancing to music.  It became so popular that the phenomenon generated not one, but six album releases!

Arguably the most significant Internet phenomenon related to music is still developing.  Rebecca Black, a thirteen year old girl, recorded the song “Friday” which certainly garnered most of its attention by those who are fascinated with the exceptions to the rule.  Critically regarded as one of the worst-written songs of all time and performed using so much post-production equipment as to almost completely obscure Black’s actual voice, “Friday” is a musical travesty.  And yet, when Black uploaded the song and video to the Internet, it garnered a huge amount of buzz.  The video for “Friday” had over thirty million hits on YouTube and the digital download of the song has sold over one hundred thousand downloads.  Black’s music career may have started as the object of Internet mockery, but between her sales numbers for the single and a Glee-cover version of the song, Rebecca Black has good reason to be happy.

Quality does not guarantee success, but the Internet has sprouted a whole subculture that makes successful music of poor quality.

Federal Taxes Made Easy: The IRS’s Free File Program Makes Paying Taxes As Cool As It Can Be!

Tax season is officially upon us!  Sure, you could procrastinate and wait until April 15 to get your taxes in at the last minute or you could make a change this year for the better!  Maybe you are waiting a few weeks to earn enough money to pay a tax service to prepare and file your taxes for you.  Whatever your excuse for not filing your taxes the same day you get your last W-2 in the mail, you are out of excuses!  For those who make less than $58,000 in adjusted gross income, the IRS now has a surprisingly cool product that makes procrastination seem utterly passé.  The program is called Free File and it is part of the federal government’s attempt to make paying taxes easier and more hip.

Free File allows you to use your computer to pay your taxes and it boasts the fastest speed for a return for any free service, which makes sense as the program is directly through the IRS!  Free File may get you your tax refund within ten days when you select direct deposit as your refund option.  Fear not!  If you use the Free File software and determine you actually owe the federal government money, you still have until April 15 to pay your taxes!

Off your computer, you need your W-2, 1099 and other tax forms ready and organized.  It helps if you have your prior year’s tax return as well.  On your prior year’s tax return, you will be able to see what your adjusted gross income was.  If you have not gotten a significant raise or taken on more jobs, your adjusted gross income is likely to be in the ballpark for this year.  If your adjusted gross income is less than $58,000, you may use the Internal Revenue Service’s Free File.

If you qualify for the income threshold, you must establish an account for Free File directly through the IRS website.  While the usual concerns about Internet security persist, Free File is more secure than most tax filing systems as the IRS is cutting out the middleman.  Because you are transmitting your data directly to the IRS, there are fewer opportunities for data thieves to access your personal financial information.

Movies That Were “Made” By The Internet.

The Internet is an amazing tool, as well as a resource.  While filmmakers are still developing ways to distribute unique content online in a way that makes it profitable and reaches enough of an audience to make the effort worthwhile, many major studios and independent production companies already use the Internet to generate enough buzz to become a phenomenon.  Some of the best examples of studios using the Internet to virally build interest in their projects follow.

One of the first, most potent successful films based largely on Internet buzz was The Blair Witch ProjectThe Blair Witch Project was a horror film that the director shot with an amateur handheld camera style and centered on the idea that the movie was actually a found video “documentary.” For months in advance of the film’s release, an Internet campaign of disinformation claimed that the movie was authentic, that the events in it were real!  As a result, many people who saw The Blair Witch Project actually believed they were witnessing the disappearance of the kids in the movie!  The Blair Witch Project grossed almost a quarter of a billion dollars as the box office and spawned a sequel, merchandising and a small comic book franchise!

Similarly, when J.J. Abrams began producing Cloverfield, the studio kept virtually every detail about the movie under wraps.  The viral marketing campaign for Cloverfield titillated potential moviegoers without providing them with actual information.  So, for months before Cloverfield was released, the advertising campaign consisted of online games where players had to look at pictures and make guesses about what was happening in them and in what order they belonged.  The only concrete elements of the movie released in advance were a ringtone and sound clip of the monster from Cloverfield.  The opening weekend grosses for the movie were almost double the film’s budget and Cloverfield ended up taking in over $170,000,000 before its theatrical run ended!

One of the most recent movies to effectively use the Internet to generate buzz was Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus.  If you haven’t heard of the movie, it is not a surprise.  The advertising campaign for the preposterous giant animal fight movie was limited almost exclusively to the Internet.  By releasing a trailer for the film to MTV.com and YouTube exclusively, the film’s distributor (The Asylum) effectively targeted the only demographics that actually wanted to see the movie.  The trailer pulled millions of viewers and kept interest in the film, even as the producers discovered it would be unlikely to get a theatrical release.  What could have been an utter disaster for the distributor turned into one of the most successful straight-to-DVD presales pushes when The Asylum paired the trailer with an easy sales path to online DVD sellers!

Some of the above movies might well have been relegated to abject failure had it not been for the studios’ effective use of the Internet as an advertising tool.

The Viral Videos Worth Remembering!

Social development seldom keeps pace with the creation and spread of new technologies.  As we become smarter and more technologically adept, there have been no significant social movements that incorporate developing the human mind in a similar fashion.  Nowhere is the disparity between emerging technologies and stagnant sociological development more clear than on the Internet.  The proliferation of high-speed transfer devices in combination with immense online data storage depots in the hands of people who are often immature has led to the rise of viral Internet videos.

Never before have so many people shared so many ridiculous, pointless or disturbing images as they have within the past five years.  But for every traumatic Internet video phenomenon, there has been a gem that is worth recalling (or experiencing if you haven’t yet).  Some of the most noteworthy (and safe for work!) viral video phenomena include:

Diet Coke And Mentos Eruption.  This viral video was a remarkably simple one wherein Mentos candies were dropped into a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke.  The result was a foaming geyser caught on video that fascinated Internet video watchers in 2006.  Debate over the video’s authenticity persisted until Mythbusters illustrated the reaction.  Now, the video remains a pretty cool bit of footage.

“Debbie’s” eHarmony Video.  Rather hilariously, this seemingly-normal eHarmony dating video takes a turn for the funny when the woman describing herself breaks into tears while discussing her love of cats.  If you haven’t seen this, it is surreal and the type of uncomfortable humor that it is almost impossible to sit through with a straight face.  Even cat lovers will laugh at “Debbie” as she cries over how great she thinks cats are.

The Star Wars Kid.  It is hard not to appreciate the teenager from Quebec whose video of himself pretending to be a Jedi leaked onto the Internet.  The boy uses a golf ball retriever as if it was a lightsaber and hurls himself around as if he was in Star Wars.  This viral video became so popular that parodies of it appeared on Arrested Development and American Dad!  With millions of hits, the Star Wars kid video reassures us that it is cool to play and, when taken out of context, people look ridiculous playing.

Sam And Ren Have A Conversation.  There is a somewhat timeless quality to the video of the two seventeen-month old twins conversing with one another in their own fictional language.  The viral video had thousands of views after it appeared on YouTube and remains popular there today.

Amid thousands of ridiculous, pointless or disturbing video clips that users upload to the Internet, few become a real phenomenon that attracts real attention.  Fortunately, time weeds out the disgusting or less funny ones and leaves viewers with some enduringly interesting online videos.

A Funnyman With A Social Conscience: Why You Should Know Ben Huh!

As a person who has a sharp sense of humor, it is hard to get people to take you seriously.  But when you are at the forefront of the Internet meme phenomenon, you have a real voice.  That voice belongs to Ben Huh, who is the owner of I Can Has Cheezburger, the site that made lolcats popular.  Even today, Huh is an outspoken humorist who carries a lot of business clout.

Ben Huh is Korean, but graduated from Northwestern University.  Despite having a journalism degree, Huh was most fascinated by humor.  Seeing humor as a universal concept, Huh studied Internet analytics and worked for several Internet companies before buying out I Can Has Cheezburger at the height of the lolcats phenomenon.  Incorporating the site under Cheezburger, Inc. Huh pushed the envelope of Internet humor beyond lolcats and into the Internet meme phenomenon.

Now, Cheezburger, Inc. runs fifty sites that draw an average of 375,000,000 hits per month, making it the most successful sustained Internet humor venture yet.  As the CEO of the company, Huh now wields more power than one might expect.  He has a blog wherein he talks very seriously about all of the different aspects of his life, including blogging candidly on what it was like to lose thousands of dollars of other people’s money.

With the recent controversy over the Stop Online Piracy Act debate, Ben Huh weighed in powerfully.  When the Internet registrar GoDaddy.com was associated with supporting SOPA, Ben Huh demanded the company explain itself.  When the CEO of GoDaddy asserted that the company supported SOPA, Ben Huh decided to make the company pay for supporting a bill he saw as detrimental to Freedom of Speech on the Internet.  Huh pulled all one thousand sites he and Cheezburger owned from GoDaddy, registering them instead with one of GoDaddy’s anti-SOPA rivals!  That move not only cost GoDaddy money, but it served as a model for how other businesses could dissociate themselves from GoDaddy.  The gambit was successful; GoDaddy got a new CEO and publicly went from supporting SOPA to claiming to be neutral on the bill!

Now, Ben Huh is devoting more of his time to The Moby Dick Project.  This new venture takes Huh back to his journalism roots and away from the humor that made him a subculture icon.  The Moby Dick Project seeks to unite journalists with a platform that will reignite legitimate journalism using the Internet.  If Huh’s history is any indication, this is another venture of his that is bound for success!

Internet Animation Phenomenon: Creativity Is Not Dead!

The Internet is truly a place where magic is alive.  The magic of creativity goes unstifled by the demands of studios, producers or networks, making it an ideal venue for the releases of independent animated projects.  Over the years, those pioneering new technologies and bored animators have captured the imagination of their niche audiences through the Internet.

What is most striking about the most successful animated phenomena on the Internet is how the overwhelming priority of their creators is to make something different and creative.  The most successful Internet animation phenomena have not sought to monetize the works the animators created.  That gives the creators of Internet animation a huge creative outlet that remains free to the fans.  A whole subculture in the animation industry has sprouted of animators who have never been associated with a major, commercially-successful enterprise.  Their works endure solely, purely, as their Internet animated phenomenon.  Some of the most notable are:

Salad Fingers.  Salad Fingers was a web-based animated series that David Firth produced and released in 2004 and 2005.  Firth is a British cartoonist who prioritizes message and content over a flashy style.  Firth created Salad Fingers using the relatively unsophisticated Adobe Flash for the animation.  Salad Fingers went viral in 2005 and is now the subject of extensive merchandising, like t-shirts and toys.  The original nine episodes of the crudely-drawn Salad Fingers remain free online to this day.

Joe CartoonJoe Cartoon is a decent example of how a viral animator’s work may become a gateway to more mainstream opportunities for an animator.  Joe Cartoon was the platform upon which “Gerbil In A Microwave” and “Frog In A Blender” were released.  More than simply disturbing Flash-based animations, they became a phenomenon.  “Frog In A Blender” was downloaded over 110,000,000 times before the hosting site it was on crashed!  Since then, Joe Cartoon has appeared on independent platforms, the television channel G4 and now YouTube.  Having been producing since 1998, Joe Cartoon illustrates a longevity few other Internet phenomena may claim.

Dancing Baby.  The Dancing Baby was a weird bit of animation and most fans of Ally McBeal probably had no idea of its origins.  The appearance of the Dancing Baby on Ally McBeal made the graphic, animated baby a mainstream phenomenon.  However, the programmers who originated the Dancing Baby developed the program two years prior and it was a hit on the Internet!

Because the Internet is clearly here to stay, mainstream culture is growing to accept that animated Internet phenomena are only likely to spread off the Internet and into the real world.

An Anything But Random Academic, Mads Haahr Is Brilliant And Clever!

It takes a special type of genius to create something truly and absolutely original on the Internet.  Mads Haahr is one of those truly unique individuals.  After all, Haahr is the founder and CEO of Random.org and there is nowhere like Random.org in the real world or online!

Mads Haahr is an academic who is fascinated by science fiction and is an adept computer programmer.  After a year at the University Of British Columbia as a visiting student in the Computer Science department, he returned to the University of Copenhagen to complete his Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and English.  He remained at Copenhagen through 1999 when he presented his Master’s thesis on ECO models.

Continuing his education in Computer Science, Haahr relocated to Ireland.  At Trinity College in Dublin, Haahr pursued his Doctorate in Computer Science.  It was during his tenure in the Doctorate program that Haahr founded Random.org and innovated an entirely new way to make a random number generator work.  By combining atmospheric sensors with his software, Haahr provided a program that was actually random by every possible measure.  This innovation came from a quirky view of the world that seeks to combine lines of programming with real world elements.  The fact that Haahr could make the system work illustrates his genius and the quality of his unique perspective.  In 2003, Haahr published his thesis, Supporting Mobile Computing in Object-Oriented Middleware Architectures and received his PhD in Computer Science.

Since then, Haahr has remained at Trinity College where he is gainfully employed as a lecturer.  While he continues to run Random.org, his creativity has expanded to the software industry.  As founder and CEO of Haunted Planet Studios, Mads Haahr continues to find new ways to blend software and reality.  To that end, Haunted Planet Studios created its first game using the Falkland Palace in Scotland.  By combining the physical location with satellite positioning technology, Haahr’s Haunted Planet Studios created an interactive computer game unlike any before.  Like Random.org, Haunted Planet Studios blends real world elements with computer programming to create an experience different from any that the user has experienced before.  That connection between the virtual world and reality is the brainchild of Mads Haahr.

Mads Haahr is a great example of how a person who sees the world differently may work effectively to change it.  Haahr is a computer programmer who is continually breaking down the walls between the virtual computer world and the physical world we live in.  Given how much he has accomplished in the last twenty years, it is exciting to think where he might lead us next!
