It can be almost impossible to find an expert specialist in a very particular medical field without a lot of struggle, time, and travel. 2nd.MD is a startup founded on the belief that everyone should have access to a specialist when necessary. Simply put, it helps to bring the world’s leading doctors to those who need them the most when they need them the most. Typically, paperwork, geography, or insurance can limit one from getting the professional help they need or even the second opinion they desire, and 2nd.MD specializes in connecting patients with doctors who can provide that second opinion on medical issues. In the past, for instance, a patient on the East coast who needed an organ transplant might need to speak with a specialist on the West coast. This would mean booking an appointment, often a brief one, then pay for a flight and accommodations only to have a doctor tell you to take a different approach. The service allows you to schedule a video chat appointment with a specialist from the comfort of your own home find out what he or she recommends. Read more »

Medical research from such reputable sources as Harvard Medical School, the National Institute of Health, and McGill University reveals that singing can have a profound impact on our physical, emotional and cognitive fitness. Medical technology has made strides in dealing with developmental disabilities, rehabilitation from brain trauma, and dementia, and now an app called SingFit combines the benefits of singing with mobile technology to, in its creators’ words, “turn music into medicine.” Studies have shown that many patients who cannot speak often can still sing, and music has been a part of healing in many cultures for millennia. Singing activates the entire brain rather than using only the left hemisphere, as in speech. SingFit works by engaging both sides of the brain to give the left hemisphere a boost and get those suffering from brain damage or disabilities moving and speaking again. Read more »

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease affects over five million people in the U.S. and is the sixth leading cause of death in the country. One in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, and, despite strides made in technology and medicine, a cure for Alzheimer’s is still illusive. There is hope to slow and diminish its effects, however, and this is where an app called Clevermind comes in. Many computers and mobile devices come with at least one “brain-training” app that claims to increase your cognitive abilities through puzzles and exercises. Clevermind takes a similar approach to mental exercise, but in contrast works specifically for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Read more »

There are many medical apps for our technology, most effectively used in conjunction with doctors and medical professionals. These allow us to help ourselves between doctor visits while enabling collaboration with others responsible for our health. Mobile devices let us keep diligent notes if, for instance, we are tracking a fever, helping us to keep up on when it is time to take medication and reviewing information with a doctor. The problem is that writing everything down becomes very cumbersome, and there can be several different ways to use our mobile devices in these situations. This is where Cures comes in. Cures is an all-in-one medical reference tool and health journaling app that helps you track illness and treatment from your mobile device. It features thousands of treatments for the most common health problems, visually designed for easy browsing, searching, and bookmarking. Most calorie counting technology, whether it’s a smartphone app or a dedicated wearable device, provides people with pure data. That data usually includes calories burned, steps taken, and numerous other cold hard facts about the user’s daily health statistics. However, the problem with this system is that most users of these fitness tracking apps and devices do not know exactly what to do about the data they receive. Without being extremely well educated in the subjects of nutrition and personal fitness, people have no context to what the data they collect actually means for them. Everyone’s body is different and the same data will mean very different things to people depending on age, weight, gender, athleticism, and various other factors. Cool product Fjuul is a fitness tracker that tries to solve this problem by taking a different approach. Rather than provide users with massive amounts of data that they don’t even understand properly most of the time, Fjuul provides people with one easily understandable metric that they can follow: Fjuul points. Users who want to try Fjuul’s system can download the app on their iPhone or iPod. If someone has trouble installing the app on his or her device, contacting Apple tech support would be the best course of action. Read more »
