Medical research from such reputable sources as Harvard Medical School, the National Institute of Health, and McGill University reveals that singing can have a profound impact on our physical, emotional and cognitive fitness. Medical technology has made strides in dealing with developmental disabilities, rehabilitation from brain trauma, and dementia, and now an app called SingFit combines the benefits of singing with mobile technology to, in its creators’ words, “turn music into medicine.” Studies have shown that many patients who cannot speak often can still sing, and music has been a part of healing in many cultures for millennia. Singing activates the entire brain rather than using only the left hemisphere, as in speech. SingFit works by engaging both sides of the brain to give the left hemisphere a boost and get those suffering from brain damage or disabilities moving and speaking again. Read more »

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease affects over five million people in the U.S. and is the sixth leading cause of death in the country. One in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, and, despite strides made in technology and medicine, a cure for Alzheimer’s is still illusive. There is hope to slow and diminish its effects, however, and this is where an app called Clevermind comes in. Many computers and mobile devices come with at least one “brain-training” app that claims to increase your cognitive abilities through puzzles and exercises. Clevermind takes a similar approach to mental exercise, but in contrast works specifically for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Read more »

While hiring long-term employees is an important part of business for restaurants, there are times when it may be necessary to hire someone for single events as well. This is particularly true of caterers and similar companies. Traditionally, staffing companies have hired servers and other staff on a full-time basis and assigned them to fill one-time events for clients. A caterer’s ability to hire for these jobs often only extends to its own staff and their network of friends and colleagues, and there is not much help for those who want experienced wait staff willing to work an event. Fortunately, now there is Bullpen, a service that helps businesses in this predicament find enough people right when they need them. It helps to assemble workers who are supplementing their employment but who are not interested in working for traditional temp agencies. Read more »

As a business, changing marketing strategies can be a risk when competing against established, well-known brands. An online business directory is more effective than traditional marketing methods, but it is still difficult to maintain an online presence with so much competition. ThatVideoMagazine wants to change that to make business directories more interesting and social for clients by providing them with a number of features that would give them an advantage. Directories with videos and comments exclusive to a company’s website are good for generating traffic to that particular website, but do not necessarily translate into maximum exposure for advertisers. The software itself is adaptable, and it updates as well as allowing parents to download new content. Thus, it changes and grows, allowing new interactions and preventing kids playing with it from becoming bored. Also unlike a typical stuffed animal, the face is the screen of the mobile device, meaning it changes and reacts while the body protects it from damage. On the other side, it is not merely a screen alone, meaning that children still get the comfort of having a huggable stuffed animal and all that comes with this innovative version. Read more »

Selling a car can be a long and difficult process, even with the added speed and ease of doing so online. There are plenty of websites like Craigslist where ads are highly visible that put the responsibility in your hands, but you must handle every aspect, while listings are quickly pushed down the page by every new one posted. Tred is a startup that looks to add greater ease, speed, and efficiency to the online vehicle marketplace. While people can post any information that they want about a vehicle for sale on similar sites, Tred offers verifiable information about its condition. For sellers, it takes a great deal of the responsibility of the process and does most of the work for a lower cost than one might expect. Read more »
