A Funnyman With A Social Conscience: Why You Should Know Ben Huh!

As a person who has a sharp sense of humor, it is hard to get people to take you seriously.  But when you are at the forefront of the Internet meme phenomenon, you have a real voice.  That voice belongs to Ben Huh, who is the owner of I Can Has Cheezburger, the site that made lolcats popular.  Even today, Huh is an outspoken humorist who carries a lot of business clout.

Ben Huh is Korean, but graduated from Northwestern University.  Despite having a journalism degree, Huh was most fascinated by humor.  Seeing humor as a universal concept, Huh studied Internet analytics and worked for several Internet companies before buying out I Can Has Cheezburger at the height of the lolcats phenomenon.  Incorporating the site under Cheezburger, Inc. Huh pushed the envelope of Internet humor beyond lolcats and into the Internet meme phenomenon.

Now, Cheezburger, Inc. runs fifty sites that draw an average of 375,000,000 hits per month, making it the most successful sustained Internet humor venture yet.  As the CEO of the company, Huh now wields more power than one might expect.  He has a blog wherein he talks very seriously about all of the different aspects of his life, including blogging candidly on what it was like to lose thousands of dollars of other people’s money.

With the recent controversy over the Stop Online Piracy Act debate, Ben Huh weighed in powerfully.  When the Internet registrar GoDaddy.com was associated with supporting SOPA, Ben Huh demanded the company explain itself.  When the CEO of GoDaddy asserted that the company supported SOPA, Ben Huh decided to make the company pay for supporting a bill he saw as detrimental to Freedom of Speech on the Internet.  Huh pulled all one thousand sites he and Cheezburger owned from GoDaddy, registering them instead with one of GoDaddy’s anti-SOPA rivals!  That move not only cost GoDaddy money, but it served as a model for how other businesses could dissociate themselves from GoDaddy.  The gambit was successful; GoDaddy got a new CEO and publicly went from supporting SOPA to claiming to be neutral on the bill!

Now, Ben Huh is devoting more of his time to The Moby Dick Project.  This new venture takes Huh back to his journalism roots and away from the humor that made him a subculture icon.  The Moby Dick Project seeks to unite journalists with a platform that will reignite legitimate journalism using the Internet.  If Huh’s history is any indication, this is another venture of his that is bound for success!

Saving Finland, Saving Nokia? Stephen Elop!

Not every technology company had a great 2011.  For sure, not every CEO can be a Steve Jobs, Gee-Sung Choi, or Steve Ballmer.  For every success in big business, there has to be a company that is losing its market share and usually the person blamed when that happens is the CEO.  2011 was just that kind of year for Stephen Elop.

Stephen Elop is the CEO and President of Nokia.  Just as in politics, where a current President might well be blamed for a problem they did not cause and are not able to solve fast enough, Stephen Elop assumed the mantle of leadership at Nokia when the company was rapidly losing its market dominance in the mobile phone market.  In fact, Elop acknowledged just how bad Nokia’s position in the global smartphone market was in a now-legendary “Burning Platform” memo.  But the Board of Directors of Nokia did not put Elop in charge to simply critique the company’s problems!  Instead, Nokia, which accounts for a sizable portion of Finland’s economy, chose Stephen Elop to save the company.

Stephen Elop came to Nokia fresh from leading Microsoft’s Business Division.  During his tenure at the head of the Business Division, Elop ushered the Microsoft Office 2010 product line to market.  Before working for Microsoft, Elop worked in business executive positions for software companies Macromedia and Juniper Networks.  That Elop was attracted to those companies makes a great deal of sense.  When Stephen Elop was studying at McMaster University, he helped to lay the Ethernet cable that created one of Canada’s first Internet networks!  He graduated from McMaster University in 1986.

With all of that experience behind him, Stephen Elop leaped at the chance to run Nokia.  Despite the criticism of Nokia in his “Burning Platform” memo, Elop has worked hard in his first year as Nokia’s CEO to stop Nokia’s downslide in the international smartphone market.  As one of his first concrete acts, Elop dumped Nokia’s longtime operating system, Symbian.  In his mandate for the company, Symbian was discontinued as the operating system for Nokia smartphones.  Elop quickly partnered Nokia with Microsoft to adopt the Windows Phone 7 as the new operating system.

While it is too early to tell if Elop’s gambit will pay off for Nokia, one thing is clear.  Nokia’s former CEO, Olli–Pekka Kallasvuo, acted paralyzed while Samsung and Apple clobbered Nokia in mobile phone production and Apple and Google (with their Android OS) eroded Nokia’s smartphone OS market share.  Stephen Elop is a man of action and he represents the best chance to save Nokia!

An Anything But Random Academic, Mads Haahr Is Brilliant And Clever!

It takes a special type of genius to create something truly and absolutely original on the Internet.  Mads Haahr is one of those truly unique individuals.  After all, Haahr is the founder and CEO of Random.org and there is nowhere like Random.org in the real world or online!

Mads Haahr is an academic who is fascinated by science fiction and is an adept computer programmer.  After a year at the University Of British Columbia as a visiting student in the Computer Science department, he returned to the University of Copenhagen to complete his Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and English.  He remained at Copenhagen through 1999 when he presented his Master’s thesis on ECO models.

Continuing his education in Computer Science, Haahr relocated to Ireland.  At Trinity College in Dublin, Haahr pursued his Doctorate in Computer Science.  It was during his tenure in the Doctorate program that Haahr founded Random.org and innovated an entirely new way to make a random number generator work.  By combining atmospheric sensors with his software, Haahr provided a program that was actually random by every possible measure.  This innovation came from a quirky view of the world that seeks to combine lines of programming with real world elements.  The fact that Haahr could make the system work illustrates his genius and the quality of his unique perspective.  In 2003, Haahr published his thesis, Supporting Mobile Computing in Object-Oriented Middleware Architectures and received his PhD in Computer Science.

Since then, Haahr has remained at Trinity College where he is gainfully employed as a lecturer.  While he continues to run Random.org, his creativity has expanded to the software industry.  As founder and CEO of Haunted Planet Studios, Mads Haahr continues to find new ways to blend software and reality.  To that end, Haunted Planet Studios created its first game using the Falkland Palace in Scotland.  By combining the physical location with satellite positioning technology, Haahr’s Haunted Planet Studios created an interactive computer game unlike any before.  Like Random.org, Haunted Planet Studios blends real world elements with computer programming to create an experience different from any that the user has experienced before.  That connection between the virtual world and reality is the brainchild of Mads Haahr.

Mads Haahr is a great example of how a person who sees the world differently may work effectively to change it.  Haahr is a computer programmer who is continually breaking down the walls between the virtual computer world and the physical world we live in.  Given how much he has accomplished in the last twenty years, it is exciting to think where he might lead us next!

Samantha Loveland, Set To Serve Yammer!

As 2011 came to an end, there were many corporate shakeups of note.  While the replacing of CEOs certainly garnered a lot of attention, like Meg Whitman taking over Hewlett-Packard, many other personnel shifts happened that could have a significant impact in 2012.  One of those realignments was Samantha Loveland.

Samantha Loveland left Salesforce.com in favor of a promotion to Vice President of Worldwide Customer Engagement at Yammer.  Yammer.com is a competitor of Salesforce.com and Loveland being poached represents a potentially big win for Yammer.

Before leaving Salesforce for Yammer, Samantha Loveland was a vice president for Salesforce in their division responsible for customer engagement.  There, Loveland had a proven record of bringing new business to Salesforce, which is probably why she was so attractive to the growing Yammer.  As the new Vice President of Worldwide Customer Engagement, she will have a similar responsibility in attracting new customers to Yammer.  Already, she has enthusiastically embraced Yammer and prioritized reinforcing new customers.  Loveland’s plan is to provide an immediate follow-up with new Yammer customers as soon as they have their first encounter with Yammer.  Through this, Loveland hopes to not only retain customers, but grow Yammer’s business by targeting problem areas identified by customers.

Management is nothing new to Samantha Loveland.  She worked for the Bank Of America in a management position after getting her MBA from Columbia University.  With credentials like that, it is no surprise that she has taken on the responsibilities of customer retention and engagement so fast.  While Loveland has moved into prominent new social networks, her focus remains on both business and customer service.  As a result, Loveland seldom comments on the technical aspects of the information technology companies for which she works.

Samantha Loveland is very articulate on the importance of customers in growing Yammer’s market share.  She is very enthusiastic about her promotion to vice president at Yammer and her enthusiasm is infectious.  Since joining Yammer, the company has been staffing up, which shows a lot of faith in the company’s new hire.  Yammer is ripe for growth and hiring Samantha Loveland is a key component in the company’s attempt at eroding Salesforce’s market share.

Samantha Loveland is the second high-level manager that Yammer has taken from Salesforce.  Shortly before hiring Loveland, Yammer hired David Obrand from Salesforce.  Loveland, ironically, reports to Obrand now at Yammer.  Yammer is counting on the duo to make Yammer.com the new big social enterprising platform!

Gee-Sung Choi, Vice Chairman And CEO Of Samsung Electronics

In the last few years, Samsung Electronics has risen to be an exceptional powerhouse in the consumer electronics industry.  In 2006, Samsung surpassed Sony as the top-selling television brand in the world.  While Apple may have taken the U.S. by storm with the iPhone, Samsung is the world’s biggest smartphone vendor.  These changes in Samsung’s market share are largely attributed to Gee-Sung Choi.  If you do not recognize the name Gee-Sung Choi, it is not surprising.  Choi is the Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics and while he has had an exceptional career, his private life has largely remained private.

Gee-Sung Choi is to Samsung what Tim Cook is to Apple Computers.  Choi is the CEO of Samsung Electronics and in that capacity, he is responsible for positioning Samsung to dominate the electronics market.  Under Choi, Samsung embraced the Android OS for smartphones.  The Android operating system is now on 52.5% of all smartphones worldwide.  The popularity of the Android OS combined with Samsung marketing several low-cost smartphone options led the company to a third quarter in which they sold 24,000,000 smartphones!  Pairing the popular OS with the lower-priced smartphones is a business decision that Choi fostered.

Like many CEOs, Gee-Sung Choi worked his way up the corporate ladder at Samsung.  Samsung is a forty year-old company and Choi has been working for Samsung for more than thirty years!  Gee-Sung Choi worked his way up from an executive in the International Trade Division to help create the Virtual Display Division of Samsung.  In that position, Choi helped build Samsung into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of monitors and televisions.  Samsung had the largest worldwide market share in monitors and televisions when the Board promoted Choi from President of Digital Media Business to President of Television Network Business.

In a similar fashion, Samsung rose to be the second largest mobile phone manufacturer by market share while Gee-Sung Choi was the President of Digital Media And Communications Business.  With such a clear track-record of success, it is very easy to see why the Board Of Directors of Samsung promoted Gee-Sung Choi CEO after Lee Kun-hee departed the company amid a scandal.  Gee-Sung Choi has remained diligent in his commitment to Samsung since his promotion and he has a firm plan through 2020 for the company!

He may not have the celebrity of a Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, but with an estimated net worth of $3.4 billion, Gee-Sung Choi certainly has the success!

The World Computer Exchange Is Working To Better The World, One Computer At A Time!

There are a lot of charities that deal with helping those who have the greatest need get technology like computers.  Of course, the very existence of such charities implies that the problem persists, but as the holidays wane and you look forward to your tax refund, perhaps you are thinking of the less fortunate.  One of the charities that are working hard to make a difference is the World Computer Exchange.

The World Computer Exchange is a charity that seeks to deliver computers to impoverished countries.  Their Computers for Girls initiative is one of the charity’s biggest endeavors.  Computers for Girls is, as its name implies, an effort to provide girls in other countries with computers.  In addition to providing computers, Computers for Girls works with girls and young women in foreign countries to teach them how to use the computers.  Computers for Girls has recently teamed with the Peace Corps to help provide the education component of their mission.  So, while the World Computer Exchange has only been operating since 2000, the Peace Corps is hardly a fly-by-night organization!

The need for computer education and computer hardware for girls is very real.  The gender gap is even more severe in nations like Pakistan, the Philippines and Panama.  Liberia, which is still recovering from its last civil war, has made women’s rights issues a very low priority on its national agenda.  So, the need for an organization like the World Computer Exchange is unfortunately very real.  The Computers for Girls initiative provides real educational opportunities to girls in thirteen of the most impoverished or oppressive counties on Earth.

The World Computer Exchange is a very reputable charity and meets most of the Better Business Bureau’s qualifications to be an accredited charity.  In fact, with 86% of every donation being used to provide the services and materials of the charity, the World Computer Exchange has a more efficient operation than the March Of Dimes (75%) or the Make-A-Wish Foundation (also 75%).  It is worth noting that the element the WCE failed to meet to get its accreditation actually helps the charity run more efficiently.  The WCE’s Board Of Directors is required to meet multiple times a year to get accredited.  Because the WCE is an international effort, their Board meetings include members who have a virtual presence at each meeting.  Using computers and telecommunications devices, those board members participate in the meetings without being physically present; the BBB does not consider that acceptable.  In some ways, it is reassuring to see a charity where the leaders are so dedicated to their cause that they will not make an international trip and abandon that cause!

The Computers for Girls initiative is putting real computers in front of girls who might otherwise receive no formal education or training.  Supporting the World Computer Exchange’s Computers for Girls program is worthwhile.

Stan Shih, Founder Of Acer

In the world of business and technology, there are some stories that truly are amazing.  In the case of Stan Shih, who founded Acer Computers, the story is one that deserves a wider audience; few Americans know his name, but his inventions have influenced almost everyone on Earth.

Stan Shih was more than a typical business executive or a computer expert.  Instead, Shih is one of the few executives who made an effective transition between the very different worlds of engineering/computer programing and multi-billion dollar business executive.  Shih’s significance to the world began in 1971.  At that time, the Taiwan-born developer created Taiwan’s first desktop calculator.  Successfully marketing his calculator, Shih did not rest on his first major industrial accomplishment.  Instead, the next year, Shih helped form Qualitron Industrial Group and spearheaded the creation of the pen watch.

What Stan Shih became known for, at least in Asia, was founding a little computer company called Multitech International Corp.  Multitech International Corp. grew and it soon evolved into a computer manufacturer known as Acer.  Shih led the company from a $25,000 startup to become one of the largest computer manufacturers on Earth.  When Shih left Acer in 2004, it was fifth in the personal computer vending market.

In his tenure as Founder and CEO of Acer, virtually every respectable publication in the business world named him one of the most influential people in the world.  In 2006, Time Magazine credited Shih with revolutionizing Taiwan’s industrial sector to create the infrastructure to make it a dominant PC-manufacturer.  Shih deserves those accolades; it was his leadership and skill that nurtured the developing market to make it one of the most important technology sectors in history.  Far from the toys and trinkets Taiwan produced before, Shih’s Acer made a viable, seemingly limitless, production industry for the country.

Since retiring from the day-to-day management of Acer, Stan Shih has shifted his focus to business pursuits.  Never forgetting how the IT industry made his career, Stan Shih founded iD SoftCapital, which is a financing company for emerging technology companies.  As the Group Chairman of iD SoftCapital, Stan Shih continues to shape the technology world by making business decisions that fund what he believes are the most profitable emerging technologies.

From the desktop calculator to the next generation of computer and electronics products, Stan Shih has left an indelible footprint on the world!

Milestone Scientific’s CompuDent Instrument

Since 1997, the coolest dentist offices in the world have all been treating their customers with a surprisingly awesome device from Milestone Scientific.  Originally called The Wand, Milestone Scientific’s CompuDent Instrument revolutionized the way dentists deliver anesthesia for oral surgery.  The CompuDent Instrument does not provide dentists with computer imaging technology to better visualize dental problems better; it makes the pain of oral surgery go away!

Computers are involved with the CompuDent Instrument, which delivers local anesthetic to oral surgery patients.  Milestone Scientific realized that much of the fear of oral surgery – of all kinds – comes from a very rational fear of pain.  The initial pain that patients felt when the oral surgeon or anesthesiologist first delivered the local anesthetic realized the fears of all those patients.  The CompuDent Instrument eliminates that initial pain.

The CompuDent Instrument is a two-piece device that includes the computer injection system and the wand.  When the dentist places the wand in the patient’s mouth, the computer injection system takes over.  The CompuDent Instrument transfers local anesthetic to the gums, teeth and other precise targets in the oral cavity through the wand.  After the wand is rooted, the CompuDent Instrument delivers the anesthetic painlessly.

The painless aspect of the CompuDent Instrument is its big selling point and the computer-assisted injection system makes the injection painless.  The initial pain of receiving local anesthetic usually comes from the pressure of the anesthetic being blasted into the tissue during the initial injection.  The CompuDent Instrument eliminates that initial pain by monitoring the pressure in the tissues surrounding the wand and adjusting the anesthetic injection and drip accordingly.  Through precision measurements and adjustments, the CompuDent Instrument makes the injections painless.  This frees up your oral surgeon to pay attention to the procedure they are doing, not your pain management.

The CompuDent Instrument’s precision delivery had an unexpected secondary benefit.  Because the CompuDent Instrument provides precise levels of local anesthetic exactly where you need it, the device all but eliminated peripheral numbing.  If you are having your wisdom tooth extracted, the anesthetic will not be so strong as to numb your lips or cheek when delivered with the CompuDent Instrument.  That precision also leads to faster recovery times, as your body metabolizes the discrete, targeted local anesthetic better.

While there have been many advances in computer imaging technology and data storage devices that have inarguably aided dentists, it is hard to argue with the benefit of a device that causes patients less pain.  The CompuDent Instrument helps make going to the dentist painless and that is very cool.

The Man With The Plans: Satoru Iwata, CEO Of Nintendo

It is a rare thing for a CEO of a computer company to be seen working in the art department of the company they run.  No one would expect to see Tom Cook, CEO of Apple Computers, at a drafting board adjusting the design of the next iPod!  And yet, Satoru Iwata periodically works on art for Nintendo software . . . despite the fact that he is CEO of Nintendo!

The board of directors of Nintendo promoted Satoru Iwata to CEO following the resignation of Hiroshi Yamauchi.  Members of the Yamauchi family had, historically, run Nintendo and the promotion of Satoru Iwata to CEO and President of the company marked a profound shift for the company.  Why did Nintendo change its longstanding tradition? Quite simply, there was no one better for the job than Iwata!

Satoru Iwata began working for the software laboratory, HAL Laboratory, right out of college.  HAL Laboratory was only three years old when Iwata took over as coordinator of software production, developing the Kirby franchise from the ground up for Nintendo.  With many successful projects under his belt, Iwata became president of HAL Laboratory.  He served as President for seven years before Nintendo wooed him to become their head of corporate planning.  He served in that capacity for only two years before Nintendo’s board of directors promoted him to CEO and President of Nintendo.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Satoru Iwata has seen Nintendo through some of its most profitable years, with no foreseeable end in sight!  Black Friday 2011 was the company’s most successful sales day for the Wii gaming console.  This might seem un-extraordinary until one considers the console has been on the market for six years now!  To have a bestselling game console after six years is an exceptional business feat.

As well, the Nintendo portable system, the 3DS, became a remarkable commercial success.  While many other video game companies were altering their business models to put their games on smartphones and other portable devices, Iwata saw an opportunity to reinvent dedicated portable video game hardware.  Iwata’s vision was prophetic as the 3DS and its related software had exceptional sales leading up to Christmas 2011.

More than anything else, Satoru Iwata is a man of vision.  He is an expert planner and his willingness to take calculated risks in a traditionally unstable market has made him a world leader in the video game marketplace.  As CEO of Nintendo, he has plans to keep the company growing for years to come and if history is any indication, he will be wildly successful.  Still, that does not mean you won’t find him working on the artwork or game design for the next Legend Of Zelda release!

Why Are There No Ergonomic Laptop Keyboards?

Have you ever noticed a product that seemed mainstream and beneficial, but then disappeared from the marketplace?  Or have you ever noticed a problem solved in the design of a product, but then manufacturers do not incorporate the changes into the design of all of the products of that type?  Considering how computers have changed over the last twenty years, the astute observers might well be asking “Where are the laptop computers with ergonomic keyboards?!”

Back in 1977, computer developers created an ergonomically-correct keyboard to help alleviate the stress on muscles and tendons in the hands from repeated typing.  While that technology was not widely incorporated at the time, during the Clinton Administration, Congress passed laws that required employers to provide their computer operators with ergonomic keyboards.  The intent of the law was to lower the number of repetitive stress muscle injuries and Carpel Tunnel Syndrome worker’s compensation claims.  For a while, ergonomics was a common buzzword in American politics and society.

At that time, ergonomic keyboards were everywhere.  The design of an ergonomic keyboard includes a split-keyboard with an extended front section, which reduces stress on the fingers, wrists and tendons of the computer user.  After Congress struck down the reforms that required businesses to incorporate ergonomic keyboards, it seems that computer manufacturers decided to not include ergonomically correct keyboards into new laptop designs.

Why did computer manufacturers fail to incorporate ergonomics into the design of laptop computers?  The answer has everything to do with space, as the cramped keyboards of many laptop and notebook computers actually exacerbate the problematic muscle movements ergonomic keyboards prevent.  A proper ergonomic keyboard requires space.  Computer manufacturers market laptop and notebook computers using the portability and convenience as a key selling point.  A proper ergonomically-correct keyboard would necessitate a laptop computer that was several inches wider.  The average ergonomic keyboard is over nineteen inches wide, which is quite a bit wider than most laptop computers these days!

What proponents of ergonomics fail to account for most when lamenting the lack of ergonomic keyboards for laptop computers is the height requirement of an ergonomic keyboard.  Ergonomic keyboards are usually raised more than two inches at the top in order to help reduce muscle strain.  Laptop manufacturers quickly came to the conclusion that there was little point in making impressive, ultra-thin LCD monitors on laptops if they had to attach the monitor to a gangly base with the awkward keyboard.

Ergonomically-correct keyboards are still widely available and some laptop computers have keyboards with better ergonomic designs than others.  But the computer manufacturers are not looking to make laptop computers with true ergonomic keyboards, even though laptop computer sales have risen in recent years and many consumers are replacing their home computers with laptop computers.  For those making such an upgrade, keep your ergonomic keyboard, it is well worth using one of your laptop’s USB ports to keep your hands comfortable and healthy!
