CEO of Comixology David Steinberger Wants to Bring Comics to Your Digital Devices

Smartphones, tablets, and computers have made the digital distribution of entertainment media a major industry in the last decade.  While the first major changes came in the music and film industries, recently the publishing industry has seen major shifts towards digital markets as well.  However, it’s not only prose that people read on their computers and mobile devices these days.  With his company Comixology, David Steinberger has helped to make comics a part of the digital publishing industry as well.  Comixology sells digital comics for reading on the web, on tablets, and on mobile devices.  Readers can buy comics in both the shorter, more traditional issue format or as larger collections of issues in many cases.  Comixology has allowed comics to storm on to the digital market thanks to the vision of its CEO, David Steinberger.

David Steinberger conceived the idea for Comixology while earning his MBA at New York University.  He teamed with co-founder and current CTO John Roberts to develop a digital distribution channel for comics.  The two won a competition for the best business plan at NYU’s Stern Business School in 2007.  Since then, Steinberger and his company have introduced a Comixology app that is available on several different mobile operating systems.  The app is most popular on the iPad, where it consistently ranks as one of the top grossing applications on the entire platform.  If you have trouble with the Comixology app on your tablet, make sure you can find iPad support.

Steinberger has also gone a step further and made comics more readable on smaller screens as well.  He designed Comixology’s “Guided View” comics reading software for smartphones so that readers didn’t need a tablet or computer to experience digital comics.  Steinberger’s software attempts to immerse the reader in each panel of a comic while dynamically moving the story forward.  This prevents readers from having to zoom in and out awkwardly to read comics on devices like the iPhone.  If you find the Guided View technology difficult, it is likely that iPhone support would be a tremendous help.

Steinberger has been passionate about comics his whole life and has been outspoken about the subject in the press.  During many interviews, he has gone into detail about his favorite comic authors and titles.  Clearly, Steinberger is a cool person in technology that has managed to leverage his passion as a business and do his part in transitioning the comics market to a digital world.
