Campus safety is an important issue as crime rates continue to be a cause for concern for many universities.  Most people wouldn’t immediately think of mobile applications as a technological tool that could help students remain safe on campus.  However, Dr. Gary Margolis is a cool person in technology that has developed exactly that—a smartphone app that students can use to keep safe while they’re at school.  Margolis and his team have developed Campus Sentinel, which gives college students a number of resources and tools to help them remain safe on campus.  The app lists detailed crime statistics for over 4,400 schools to help students remain informed about what’s going on around them.  This will hopefully help them make safer decisions as they go about campus life.   

Margolis’s app doesn’t only provide statistics.  He has also made sure the app includes access to a number of safety resources for all aspects of college—not just resources for campus safety but also resources for studying abroad and even spring break travel safety tips.  Margolis has even included a campus safety alert feature, which users can set to their school of choice to get campus safety updates pushed directly to their phone whenever something happens.  If your smartphone doesn’t get updates correctly when you use the app, find mobile computer support for help.  Margolis wants college students to have a full set of resources that give them the best chance to stay safe on campus.  That’s why he’s tried to make Campus Sentinel as comprehensive as possible.

Margolis didn’t have much background in technology before creating Campus Sentinel, but he has extensive experience in education and public safety.  Margolis earned a doctorate in education from the University of Vermont in 2001.  He was also the chief of the University of Vermont police for eleven years between 1998 and 2009.  Currently, Margolis is a managing partner at Margolis Healy and Associates LLC, a security firm for both K-12 schools and institutions of higher education.  Clearly, Margolis’s lifelong work in safety and education was the driving force behind his desire to publish Campus Sentinel.
