This Device Would Do It In a Heartbeat – the Nymi

How far has identity authentication come?  From formerly high tech methods such as face unlock to retinal scanners in action-packed spy movies, technology is moving toward a system that requires “putting your heart into it.”  Imagine coming home and, without any action on your part, pulling into an unlocked garage, entering your unlocked home, and entering a room where your music of choice and even your room temperature of choice welcome you home.  Add having your favorite dinner on the table and the candles lit and you’d have the perfect picture!

The Nymi, a cool product created by Bionym, lets you get a little closer to this picture.  The Nymi is a device that allows you to open all types of things, without keys or passwords, but with your unique electrocardiogram.  A person’s ECG is a measure of the electrical activity generated by the heart and is dependent upon that person’s unique heart size, position, and physiology.

Dr. Karl Martin, founder and CEO of Bionym, states that your ECG is as unique to you as your fingerprint, but unlike your fingerprint, is not a physical feature that can be stolen or that you leave everywhere you go.

At present, the Nymi itself is a bracelet, though the company says that it doesn’t have to be.  Martin says, “It could be a ring, a necklace, a waistband, anything. The wristband is just the first idea”.  Anything will work that has a clasp-like mechanism that makes it clear the person has taken the device off.  From the moment you tap the wearable device, the Nymi is constantly authenticating – telling the world that you are you, allowing you to securely communicate your identity to all your favorite devices, according to Nymi’s website.

Nymi’s website states further that there is no need to sacrifice security for convenience.  The Nymi functions on a 3-pronged security system.  To use your identity, you must have your Nymi bracelet on, your unique heartID, and an Authorized Authentication Device – a smartphone or other device registered with the Nymi app.  “Identity is much more than just passwords and credit card numbers.”  When it comes to protecting your identity through an Internet security system, Rescuecom agrees.

Bionym’s website invites open source development of applications, stating, “Be the first to build with the Nymi.” Martin has big plans for the device.  “We’re really interested in how to create hyper-personalized experiences.”  When computerized devices need hyper-personalized attention, third party service providers such as Rescuecom offer customized tech support for home and business use.

The Nymi may make passwords, keys, and even credit card numbers outdated.  This cool product “unlocks a world of possibilities with every beat of your heart.”
