You Wake To Find Yourself In A Dark Room . . .
There are amazing things users can do on YouTube. YouTube is the ultimate playground for users with creativity, a video camera, and a computer. It should come as no surprise then to find that the YouTube user ThatsMrRobertson has created a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure game entitled The Dark Room.
A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure game, in this context, is a series of videos linked together that create different story lines based on which video the player chooses next. Players watch a video, then choose an option and click the link to that video. On that video, they choose another link and so on.
The object of the story in The Dark Room is to find your way out of a dark, featureless room. John Robertson (ThatsMrRobertson) narrates the game in a snarky and sometimes-offensive manner. A few of the videos contain vulgar language and he often insults the player. Some users may find the game inappropriate, rude, and not worth their time. However, the first video of the game has over 292,000 views and subsequent videos have nearly as many views, so clearly there is an audience who is sticking with the attempt to get out of the room. According to ThatsMrRobertson, out of hundreds of thousands of viewers, less than 900 users have found their way to the so-called “good ending” of the game.
In real life, the creator of The Dark Room is John Robertson, an Australian comedian who also performs in the United Kingdom. He began his comedic career in 2002 and has since become quite famous in Australia and Britain. He first began the game as part of a routine on stage, and translated it to YouTube so that other people could enjoy it. The success of his YouTube channel and The Dark Room has begun to help bring his comedy to the rest of the world.
The game is just frustrating enough that people want to both quit and find the way out at the same time. Some users have taken to using the comments to help other people find the endings. In true Choose-Your-Own-Adventure fashion, there are unexpected surprises at each turn that can make you want to keep playing. The surprises in The Dark Room encourage viewers to press on or go back and try a different method of escaping the room.
The Dark Room is just one example of the amazing things available on YouTube from users with the time, creativity, and ambition to come up with the next big hit on the Internet. Other sensations have made a bigger splash within the online community, but few have been as creative as Mr. Robertson’s Choose-Your-Own-Adventure game.
