What Do You Do When Your IPO Is A Stumble? Mark Pincus Just Keeps Going!

One of the big stories in the technology sector at the end of 2011 was the initial public offering of stock for Zynga.  Zynga, the creator of some of Facebook’s most popular games, was all set to leap into the business of making money off its popularity and the IPO sought to raise billions of dollars for the company.  Amid news reports of other video game companies experiencing financial hardships, the Zynga IPO was viewed by many as catastrophic, with the stock losing value its first few days.  While this might have made a lesser CEO cringe and get out of the game, it was nothing to Mark Pincus.

Mark Pincus is not only the CEO of Zynga, but he is the Founder and Chief Product Officer of the company as well.  Why would a man wearing so very many hats for a company be unphased by one of the worst tech stock IPOs since the Internet bubble burst?  Quite simply, Pincus has been there before, though not on the scale of Zynga’s financial woes.

As an entrepreneur, Mark Pincus is no stranger to failure.  With the popular success of Zynga on Facebook, Pincus’s efforts have largely been associated with the good things about being an entrepreneur.  However, the road to Zynga was a pretty long one for Pincus.  After attending the Wharton School of Business and graduating summa cum laude, Pincus earned his Master’s in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.  From Harvard, Mark Pincus took positions in media and venture capital firms where he got real-world experience.

In 1995, Pincus founded FreeLoader and if you’ve never heard of it, that is not surprising; shortly after he created the web-based company, it was bought and he moved on to greener pastures.  The first real green pasture for Pincus was with Support.com, which he sold in order to continue his online innovations.  Tribe.net was one of his creations and that early social network inspired Pincus to create Zynga.

Mark Pincus founded Zynga on the idea that social networks and social gaming ought to go hand-in-hand.  The model, successful from the popular perspective of the love users have for Farmville and Words With Friends (the game Alec Baldwin was playing so eagerly he was kicked off a plane!), has made Zynga a rising star in the video game industry.  Pincus’s perseverance is an important component of Zynga’s success.

With a will to succeed and a commitment to Zynga, Mark Pincus is settling in for his longest run of a powerful technology company yet!
