Walter Thinfen Keeps Visioneer Focused!
The role of Chief Information Officer at a tech company is often one that straddles the responsibilities assigned to a Chief Strategy Officer and a Chief Marketing Officer. The position usually requires someone who has both incredible product knowledge and a strong sense of where the market for the product is headed. That type of rare strategic mind can help guide a company’s technological and systems development decisions. For Visioneer, Walter Thinfen has repeatedly proven that he had that type of strategic outlook!
Walter Thinfen is the Chief Information Officer of Visioneer, a role he has held since May 2000! In addition to serving as CIO, Walter Thinfen is Visioneer’s Vice President of Customer Operations, in which capacity he interfaces with enterprise customers to provide expert business advice on using Visioneer products. As a result, Thinfen has spent the past twelve years effectively delivering and adapting a strategy that keeps Visioneer scanning products growing in the business, as well as consumer, markets.
In many ways, the roles of Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Customer Operations are ideal for Walter Thinfen. Educated in the early 1980s at California State University’s Hayward School of Business and Economics, Thinfen illustrated a keen grasp on management techniques and studying market trends. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on information systems in 1985 and soon applied that degree at Frox Inc. At Frox, Thinfen managed both the Information Technology and Accounting groups, which helped him gain real world experience understanding how IT and finance interacted.
Walter Thinfen got a taste of his future position when he left Frox in 1995 for Norsk Hydro. At Norsk Hydro, Walter Thinfen took on additional responsibilities as the Information Technology Manager. Over the six years Thinfen worked for Norsk Hydro, he effectively transformed the company’s software framework to a SAP inventory system. After effectively lobbying the executives at Norsk to adapt the SAP framework for the company, Walter Thinfen trained the company in its use, which was no small task considering the worldwide nature of Norsk!
The success of Walter Thinfen’s transition of the Norsk Hydro system put him in demand by several companies in the tech sector. As the Norsk Hydro work was winding down, Thinfen joined Visioneer. In taking on a strategic role at Visioneer, Walter Thinfen’s influence was almost immediately felt; he developed a corporate mission statement and strategic plan that was put into immediate effect. His efficient management style saved the company $1.5 million in the first year of his plan being executed! Building on that initial success, Walter Thinfen delivered Visioneer to the company’s financial goal milestone a full two years ahead of schedule.
With results like the ones Walter Thinfen had when he arrived at Visioneer, it is shocking that he has not been poached by other tech sector companies, but it is unsurprising that Visioneer continues to regard him as one of their greatest assets!
