The War for the Internet
Facebook versus Google Plus – which side are you on? It is the battle for the future of social networking and the outcome will decide the direction the Internet takes in the coming years. Google+ is still a relatively new social networking site, having only been launched last year, but it shows promise.
Some of the most basic features of Google+ were applauded by the public when first introduced. Facebook did its best to integrate similar features within its own site, but the features on Google+ are far more seamlessly incorporated. These features include the circles, hangouts, and making Google+ part of all other Google websites.
Google+ allows you to easily group your friends the way we do in real life with the circles feature. The best thing about this feature is that no one else knows in which group you have put him or her. The hangouts are the video chat feature for Google+ and this feature allows people to chat with everyone in one of their circles all at the same time.
By putting Google+ directly in the Google bar, which graces the top of every Google service, Google has allowed its users to share things they find on the Internet quickly with their social network without having to leave the page they are browsing. This little bit of convenience could make a huge impact on people when they try out Google+.
Facebook has not been silent since Google+ debuted. In fact, Facebook is fighting back and fighting hard. Facebook no longer allows Google access to its website for inclusion in search results, says Agustino Fontevecchia from Forbes. Facebook hopes to damage Google’s effectiveness by denying it access to what is currently the largest social network on the Internet and one of the most frequented websites online. Google could sustain further damage if other websites follow Facebook’s lead and cut off its access.
Facebook has released many new features, most recently the Timeline that is changing the way users view other peoples’ profiles. Facebook, which has millions of users and will not be losing its number one spot soon, should still be worried about the possible future of Google+.
It may take time and effort on the part of Google, but Google+ is heading in the right direction to one day dominate Internet social networking. Many people are becoming dissatisfied with the level of Internet security on Facebook because of recent hacks into personal information. Facebook needs to be careful about their decisions or users may decide that it is outdated, just as they did several years ago with MySpace. Then again, maybe the future of social networking is a website or service that is not yet available. With the way the Internet changes, websites can just as easily become wildly popular as they can be forgotten.
