That Really is a Celebrity on Facebook
Facebook loves to make changes. Facebook is always updating, rearranging, and adding new features to the site, but sometimes the changes come a little too rapidly. People are only just starting to use their Timelines, and now Facebook has another new feature – verified accounts.
A verified account is not for everyone. Facebook is only planning to verify celebrities, public figures, and very popular Facebook users. Verification simply means that Facebook has determined that the person who set up and uses the account is actually who they claim to be. This can prevent unsuspecting Facebook users from scams by fraudulent celebrity profiles, which has become a legitimate Internet security threat.
Individual users cannot ask Facebook to verify their account; instead, Facebook will ask users to confirm their identity based on how many subscribers they have. In order to prove that a user is who they say they are, Facebook is asking for a picture or copy of an official identification card. The social network says it will immediately delete the copy after it verifies the account. Some people may not wish to verify their account simply because Facebook has a poor history of actually deleting pictures and information.
The new Facebook verification feature comes only a few months after the site released the subscription feature. Subscriptions allow more relationships that are one-sided on Facebook between celebrities and their fans. This way, fans can follow what a public figure does on Facebook without the famous person having to add hundreds of thousands of friends. Subscriptions have helped Facebook strengthen its reputation for Internet security because it allows public figures a way to let fans know what they are doing while keeping some things private between their real-life friends and family.
A verified account will not appear any different from a normal account except that the user can put a nickname or pseudonym in place of their real name. This will greatly benefit celebrities like Eminen, Snoop Dogg, and Lady Gaga whose fans may not know their real names. The pseudonym will appear around the Facebook website where the real name was previously, but the real name will still be on the celebrity’s Timeline under the “About Me” section.
Facebook is not the place for people who do not like change. The social networking site is always working on making the site newer, better, and different so that it stays on the leading edge of the Internet community. Verified public figure accounts in just another way for Facebook to maintain its position as the largest and most popular social network online.
