Stumble Your Way To Something New With StumbleUpon
There are billions of pages on the Internet and millions of things to do on those pages. Among other things, you can chat with people across the globe, learn about new computer support issues, write blogs about your favorite subjects, or watch streaming movies. So why would we ever run out of things to do online? For those who face the overwhelming choices the Internet offers with a profound sense of indecision or who enjoy the thrill of discovery, there is StumbleUpon.
StumbleUpon is billed as a “discovery engine.” Instead of looking for specific information, StumbleUpon encourages users to enjoy the thrill of discovering new and different websites that contains content within the general realm of interests a user has. This is a great tool for computer users who have a lot of time and enjoy sifting through websites without having a set goal (i.e. writing a paper, shopping for a gift) in mind.
When a user logs into the StumbleUpon website, they are able to enter all of their interests, so that they can “stumble” them. When you click on the stumble button, it will randomly provide you with a website based on one of the interests you provided. After exploring the site, you can click either the thumbs up button or the thumbs down button to indicate whether or not you enjoyed the webpage. Based on your ratings, Stumbleupon will change the sites it provides for you.
Users can share any website they find that they think others will enjoy by adding it to their StumbleUpon site. Then, other users will be able to find that webpage either by going to that person’s StumbleUpon site directly or by simply stumbling upon it!
Back in December, the StumbleUpon website went through a major site redesign. The changes streamlined the service and made it easier for users to stumble specific interests as opposed to all of their interests at once.
Some users had problems with the update, which removed of a few features StumbleUpon programmers believed did not work ideally. The biggest problem users had with the redesign was that StumbleUpon removed the “X” button that used to hide the StumbleUpon frame from the website they were viewing. Users made themselves heard on the feedback forums and CEO Garret Camp reinstated the option of hiding the StumbleUpon bar. Another reinstated feature was the direct source link on a specific site’s page, so that search engines can properly find the pages.
If you are bored and have time to waste on the Internet, why not try StumbleUpon? It is a fun, interesting, and cool way to find new things to do online!
