Spotify Spreads Its Influence

Since the fall of Napster, many legitimate digital music companies have sprouted up.  One of the most successful so far has been Spotify.  Spotify has a partnership with Facebook which allowed the company to easily promote its service and provide Facebook users with hours of free digital music each month.  The partnership between Spotify and Facebook was a great strategic move for Spotify; the digital music company attributes three million new subscribers to the Facebook connection.  Spotify is looking to build upon that by growth by spreading a similar Spotify widget throughout the Internet.

Just as with Facebook, Spotify is now offering a music-player application to most major websites.  Spotify’s hope is that they will be able to reach an audience of listeners with whom they have not had contact.  Appealing to newspaper, blog and specific-interest sites, Spotify’s new widget will provide virtually the same access to music as the Facebook plug-in, to engaged web users who might not enjoy social networking or Facebook.

The websites that are adding the Spotify widget have a great incentive to add the device.  More than simply advertising Spotify’s digital music program, the widget allows website to add a richer level of content than they might already have.  By adding free music, reviews and articles can be enhanced to make a more effective illustration of the author’s point.  Adding music to their websites allows more traditional sites to attract and retain younger or more web-savvy visitors by stimulating more of their senses.  In other words, Spotify’s new widget has some potential benefits for the websites that incorporate it.

The new Spotify widget is live now and disseminating through websites all across the Internet.  In order to actually use the widget to take advantage of digital music content that websites you visit want to share with you, you must already have Spotify’s software installed on your computer.  You do not need to be a premium subscriber, but you do need Spotify installed in order to enjoy the music affiliated websites will share through the new widget.

Ultimately, Spotify is taking a long-term approach to growing its presence in the digital music marketplace and the extension of its Facebook-style plug-in to a broader widget on the Internet makes a lot of sense.  Where other digital music applications have failed to grow, Spotify is making all the right moves to avoid the mistakes of its predecessors!
