One of the nice aspects of a successful product or service offered through the Internet is that frequently, clones pop up!  Every good idea offered by the Internet seems to be replicated for a different market or niche than the original site and it is interesting to see which services survive the competition and where the derivative sites outdo the original.  Netflix, for example, moved into the digital movie streaming business and when it found success with that, Amazon Prime and other, smaller, services were developed by competitors.  Now, there are many video streaming sites on the Internet, many of them specialized for a specific, niche.  For television lovers who want to be able to stream their favorite shows, there is Hulu Plus.

Hulu Plus is a digital streaming service that is prioritizing access to television programs.  Hulu Plus does have some movies – mostly older ones, over a decade old – and while the service offers a lot of documentaries that other streaming services do not, the clear priority of Hulu Plus is to provide on-demand television.  For $7.99/month, you essentially get to create your own television station or sit and watch entire seasons of your favorite programs without the expense of buying the DVD boxed set.  The low cost of Hulu Plus may encourage you to give shows you have not, traditionally, watched a chance because the one price covers all programming for the month; there is no fee for watching excessive amounts (contrary to many providers of smartphone service, who hike up the rate or cut off service when you reach a certain “data limit”).

The benefits of Hulu Plus are pretty obvious.  While many broadcast networks feature their prime time programming on their website days after the shows air, Hulu Plus has arrangements with all of the major networks to post programming within twenty-four hours of when they originally air.  In fact, the arrangements with Hulu Plus have altered the way streaming content appears on many of the network websites.  The networks will delay posting new episodes for over a week in order to give Hulu Plus an edge.  As well, Hulu Plus maintains entire seasons of a show indefinitely, whereas most of the major broadcast networks remove their streaming content for shows in advance of the DVD/Blu-Ray release.

Hulu Plus is very easy to use.  Creating an account is comparatively fast and trouble-free.  Once you have created an account, simply browse through the online library or use the Hulu Plus search engine to find the specific program or episode for which you are looking.  Hulu Plus plays each episode in a decent-sized window, with the option of a full-screen mode.  As well, virtually every episode features varying quality for the presentation.  So, for example, if you are watching the latest episode of Modern Family on your smartphone where the screen size is minimal, you may go with a low-quality stream of the episode and see and hear the show just fine.  By contrast, if you stream a special effects-driven show, like Terra Nova directly to your HDTV, you will want the HD stream and Hulu can accommodate that.

Hulu Plus may have limited commercials, but it also is developing original content.  Between the extensive library, low cost, and new original programming, Hulu Plus has enough value to it to make it a great service for the television fan who simply does not have the time to schedule their life around their favorite programs.
