Samsung Regains the Number One Position in the 2014 Q1 Computer Reliability Report
RESCUECOM released the results of the computer reliability report for the first quarter of 2014 today. The report revealed that Samsung has once again risen to the number one position in the reliability rankings. In the previous reliability report, Amazon debuted in the number one ranking with an extraordinarily high reliability score. While Amazon managed to maintain a strong score this quarter, the company could not keep the top spot in reliability. Instead, perpetual top performer Samsung once again became the most reliable computer manufacturer on the market according to the study.

1 – Computer repair share percentages and computer reliability scores include tablets.
2 – The computer reliability report does not include “other” manufacturers, defined as all manufacturers that have below 1.0% market share.
3 – Market share numbers are provided by IDC.
Samsung has continuously impressed in RESCUECOM’s reliability reports. Ever since Samsung debuted as part of the study in 2012, the company has remained in the top three for reliability in every report. Even as Samsung’s market share has grown over the years, the company has maintained strong reliability. The company has kept the number of third-party computer repair calls for their products relatively low. Samsung’s impressive consistency over several years demonstrates that they are a clear leader in the industry when it comes to product reliability.
With Amazon’s Kindle Fire having spent more time on the market, it’s likely a slight rise in tech support calls from their customers took place this quarter. With people purchasing the popular tablets, the rate of computer repair service calls was bound to increase. This is simply common sense when one considers the increase of Amazon tablets on the market now. However, the increase in service calls for Amazon products has stayed mostly in proportion to the rise in tablets sold. Amazon may not have been dominant in this computer reliability report, but they have proven that their previous strong reliability score was certainly not a fluke by remaining in the top two.
Apple, another very consistent performer in reliability, came in third place in the reliability rankings. The MacBook manufacturer has been a historically strong performer in RESCUECOM’s reliability reports, taking the number one position in reliability on many occasions. Even with the relatively recent inclusion of tablets, which became part of the computer reliability report in 2013, Apple has managed to remain a top player in the area of reliability. Apple has a huge market share thanks to the popularity of the iPad but the company still manages to keep the number of third-party computer repair calls about their products comparatively low.
Other companies with big chunks of market share, specifically Dell and HP, have not been able to maintain the same success as Apple. The rarity of either company’s appearance in the top three for reliability rankings over the last several years proves how difficult keeping a high reliability score while also holding a major piece of the tablet and computer market can be for manufacturers.
Toshiba and Asus remain in the middle of the rankings, holding the number five and six spots respectively. Toshiba has jumped Asus in the rankings for this quarter due to a jump of roughly fifty points in their reliability score. Meanwhile, Asus’s score rose less than ten points from the previous report.
Acer’s troubles continue as they are once again at the bottom of the rankings, a spot the company has remained in for six straight quarterly computer reliability reports. The manufacturer will have to make some serious changes if they intend to turn their fortunes around when it comes to reliability.
While there weren’t any massive shifts in the rankings for this reliability report, several patterns are definitely emerging if one takes it in context with the last several reports. Certain companies have settled firmly into strong positions, such as Samsung and Apple. Meanwhile, others like HP, Dell and Acer, find themselves still struggling to rise in the rankings. Everything changes with time, but for the moment, a clear status quo is becoming visible in the world of computer reliability.
