Ron Geis, Leading YSI To Grow!
It is sometimes amazing to think that so many viable business entities in the tech sector rose around niche products. More than any other industry, the tech sector fosters the concept that for every great idea, there is a way to make it real and form a business with that product as its centerpiece. Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI), the manufacturer of the ProOdo dissolved oxygen sensor, knows just how that sort of specific and esoteric product can build a viable business. In fact, YSI built so many scientific instruments so well, they were bought by Zylem. To manage the new company, Ron Geis accepted a position as Vice President and General Manager of YSI. With Geis’ strong record of growing companies and increasing profits, this appointment would seem to be a strategic move by the parent company, indicating anticipated significant expansion.
Ron Geis started his career at Thermo Fisher Scientific, a company that manufactures and distributes scientific equipment, after graduating from the University Of Massachusetts at Lowell. Geis received his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Lowell and moved almost immediately into his role as Director of Engineering and Quality Systems at Thermo Fisher Scientific’s New Hampshire site. He spent six years in that role, during which time the company recognized Geis for successfully managing the project and improving that site. As a result of Ron Geis successfully growing the New Hampshire site, Thermo Fisher Scientific promoted Geis to Director of Global Operations, where he distinguished himself for over five years in promoting growth for the company across several sites. Ron Geis expanded the influence of Thermo Fisher Scientific in four international locations as well as two United States-based facilities during his tenure as Director of Global Operations.
From there, Geis’s career began a whirlwind of promotions and opportunities. Thermo Fisher Scientific promoted Geis to General Manager of their Portsmouth branch. There, he managed a $100,000,000 manufacturing and distribution operation. His tenure there was brief; after a year, ITT hired Geis to be their Global Director of Operations. With twice the net worth of the Portsmouth business, ITT showed confidence in Geis that allowed him to succeed and effectively manage the global workforce of the slightly smaller company. Clearly Ron Geis performed admirably as Global Director of Operations, because when ITT acquired YSI, Geis was promptly promoted again. He served as Global Director of Operations for only eleven months before he became the new Vice President and General Manager of YSI.
With his proven record of safety and his skills at global management, it is hard to think of a better leader for YSI and Xylem than Ron Geis. With his mechanical engineering background and leadership skills, Ron Geis assumes the ideal to take YSI forward into the future. Since becoming General Manager, Geis’s public statements have all been positive and one suspects it will be a very good year for YSI!
