Puzzle Me This! Alexey Pajitnov May Be The Coolest Game Designer Ever!
Have you ever wondered just what kind of person it takes to design a puzzle game? Who comes up with things like Rubik’s Cubes and Tetris and Angry Birds? It takes an incredible, special mind to create a puzzle game that becomes a phenomenon. Alexey Pajitnov is that exact type of imaginative thinker who can make a brilliant puzzle using only his imagination.
Alexey Pajitnov is the creator of Tetris, the immensely popular dropping-block puzzle game. Pajitnov found similar success – though not the pop culture dispersion or market dominance – more recently with Hexic and Yoshi’s Cookie. Ironically, Pajitnov developed Tetris while Russia was part of the U.S.S.R., so he did not make money off his creation until 1996, after the fall of the Soviet Union! Well before it became a breakout hit in the United States, Tetris was popular in the U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe.
While Pajitnov had a lifelong love of games, mathematical puzzles fascinated him by age fourteen. This motivated Alexey Pajitnov to study applied mathematics. He studied at the Moscow Institute of Aviation where he earned his Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics. Working for the Soviet government, Alexey Pajitnov applied his talents to computers. Many in the technology sector consider Pajitnov one of the pioneers in programming for speech recognition software and basic artificial intelligence designs!
For all of his accomplishments in practical computing, it was puzzles that continued to fascinate Alexey Pajitnov. While working for the Moscow Academy of Sciences as a computer programmer, Pajitnov began a side project. That side project quickly evolved into his own game. Working on it in his spare time, Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984. Shortly after he finished work on Tetris, he brought the game to the attention of Henk Rogers, who worked for a Japanese software company. A year later, Tetris spread through the U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe before the U.S.S.R. licensed the game to Nintendo. Only a few years after he first conceived it, Tetris became a worldwide phenomenon among gaming enthusiasts!
Like many inventors, Alexey Pajitnov was not content to rest on his laurels (or continue creating great games for free!). With the fall of the Soviet Union, Pajitnov moved to the United States. In the U.S., Pajitnov created Hexic and Hexic HD is now found on every Xbox 360 sold in the States! With great games like Tetris and Hexic on his resume, it is exciting to consider what Pajitnov might come up with next!
