Mozilla Wants To Change The Way You Get Apps!
Have you ever heard of an amazing new app that you really wanted to use, only to find out that it is not available on your device? The current limitations of app stores can be frustrating for both consumers and developers. Mozilla, the company who brought you the Firefox web browser, wants to change the restrictive nature of app stores by putting them all online.
Web-based apps are slightly different from the native apps that download onto your mobile computing device. A native app runs from your device, but a web app is more like a link to a web page where the app runs. This takes up less space on your device, but web apps tend to be slightly more limited than native apps because they always require Internet access.
Mozilla recently announced its intention to set up an online app store that will not be restricted to any specific operating system, device, or browser. Users will need a Mozilla Persona account to purchase the apps, but they will not need any specific portal to access the store or the apps.
By creating a general app store that will be available to anyone with Internet access, Mozilla is in line with its open source origins. All of the software Mozilla creates, including Firefox is open source, which means it is free to anyone who wants to use it or change it. An app store built on that premise will be the first of its kind, and a boon to both developers and consumers.
Developers will only have to worry about making and updating one version of their app. They can create their app and test it online without having to worry about what browser, operating system, or device a user will run the app on. This will simplify the process greatly for anyone who creates apps for the Mozilla store, as well as allow them to update more quickly because they only have to create, test, and distribute one version.
Consumers will also benefit by being able to download the apps they order from the store to any of their mobile computing devices. With the flexibility the Mozilla app store offers, it will create more competition between app stores so prices will go down and quality will go up. Mozilla’s online app store is a good idea and it is being presented at the right time. As smartphones and tablet computers continue to increase in popularity, making apps more easily obtainable, higher quality and less expensive is a real boon to consumer. Mozilla deserves a lot of credit for pursuing their online app platform!
