There are few entrepreneurs, even in the tech sector, who have the ability to create a hit product with every one of their major releases.  Mike Harrington, creator of Half-Life and Picnik, is one such innovator.  Interestingly enough, Harrington’s partner in co-founding Picnik, Darrin Massena, also has had an uncommon number of successful ventures, especially for his young age.

Darrin Massena is a creative genius.  While others he has worked with have had more programming knowledge or experience, Massena has a head for creative thinking.  As such, he has correctly anticipated market trends and applied his imagination to creating products that solve problems for neglected consumer bases.  One need only look at the formation of Picnik to see how Massena realized that the time was ideal for a web-based digital photo editing program to take the online world by storm.  While Harrington may have had the programming knowledge to build much of the Picnik program, it was Massena who came up with the name, created the business model, and sold his partner on the importance of executing their casual idea immediately.

Despite having a head for ideas and being organized enough to manage the businesses that he helped found, at least at their inception, Darrin Massena’s background is actually one of programming.  For more than twenty-five years, Massena has been active in software programming and even some of his early developments paid off in significant ways for him.  Darrin Massena worked for Microsoft as a development manager.  It was in that role that he and Mike Harrington became friends and formed their working relationship.

Darrin Massena is co-authored the popular strategy game Warfare Incorporated.  Between that successful product launch and the success of Spiffcode, which Massena co-founded, Darrin Massena quickly built a very favorable reputation for himself within the tech sector.  Outside the tech sector, Massena’s reputation grew as something of a prophet in the business world.  Massena’s consistent record of success made it much easier for him to get funding, especially when he and Harrington needed capital to launch Picnik.

In addition to winning the Leonardo DaVinci Award while at Microsoft, Darrin Massena was named the Technology Innovator Of The Year from the Washington Technology Industry Association in 2009.  The WTIA award helped bring Picnik and Darrin Massena greater credibility in the online world.  As it was, Massena’s work as a founding member of the Palm Open Source Community had raised Massena to a household name in tech circles quite some time prior.

With Picnik being shut down, Darrin Massena is once again a free agent.  Having left Google – he became a Google employee when Google bought Picnik – Massena is once more searching for the next significant niche to fill.  Undoubtedly, when Darrin Massena finds the problem he wants to solve in the tech sector, his next new product release will be another rousing success!
