More Than Just A “Woman On The Board,” Claudia Nemat Is Invaluable To Deutsche Telekom!
There are few sectors of business where the glass ceiling is more evident than the technology sector. For whatever reason, women in executive level and high management positions are almost completely absent from the ranks of the tech sector. Even as some companies in the tech sector work to change the disappointing way women are excluded from top positions, the companies that lead the charge of businesses that have women on their executive management team are always looking to put the best person in the available position. For Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile U.S.A., that meant hiring Claudia Nemat.
Claudia Nemat manages Deutsche Telekom in Europe. She ascended to her position on the Board in October 2011 after consulting for Deutsche Telekom through the firm of McKinsey & Co. Claudia Nemat is ideal for working throughout Europe on the giant telecommunications company as she had close ties to many executives in Deutsche Telekom in advance of her joining the Board. Moreover, as a consultant in Europe for almost two decades, Claudia Nemat has relationships all around the tech sector that enable her to get meetings that less experienced executives could not!
A graduate of the University of Cologne with a degree in Physics, Claudia Nemat taught physics before entering the business world. As a consultant for European technical companies, Nemat shared her expertise of physics to help solve fundamental problems in the theories of emerging technologies. Claudia Nemat was integral to solving some of the earliest problems in cellular communications technology. Quickly seeing how companies used her expertise, Nemat’s focus developed from the physics and development end of consulting for IT companies to the business side. As she became an expert in business and management techniques, Claudia Nemat helped to turn around some of the failing giants of the European tech sector.
That level of success made Claudia Nemat the ideal candidate to manage Deutsche Telekom’s European operations when CEO Rene Obermann announced an initiative to woo and retain more women to high level positions at Deutsche Telekom. Since the hire, Nemat has been much more than just a token woman on the Board! With the Greek debt crisis, Claudia Nemat has been exceptionally busy preventing one of Deutsche Telekom’s big investments – in Hellenic Telecommunications Organization SA – from souring from the currency problem. By working with the tech sector, economists and leaders in the European governments, Claudia Nemat is continuing her record of success in her new position.
When Rene Obermann hired Claudia Nemat to join the Board of Managers for Deutsche Telekom, he was not simply putting a powerful woman in an important position; he put the best possible person in a position of vital importance. Claudia Nemat has risen to every challenge while managing Deutsche Telekom’s European operation!
