Mixing Music And Web Design, Michael Kaplan Is Very Cool!
Quite a few creative individuals find that the art they love and skills they develop through higher education are not immediately profitable. As a result, the current generation of would-be playwrights, painters, and photographers have largely turned to the tech sector for income while they develop the craft they are passionate about in their spare time. As such, they end up as bloggers, digital artists and software engineers while they work in their off-time toward their “big break.” One such artist who is leading the dual life in the artistic and tech sectors is Michael Kaplan.
Michael Kaplan is both a musician and an information technology project manager. By day, Kaplan works for the esteemed R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company where he manages the execution of IT projects. When not working for one of the most powerful and important companies in the communications technology sector, Michael Kaplan focuses on his music. As composer and lead vocalist for the Flaud Logic Project, Michael Kaplan explores digital music as a composer, primarily using MIDI.
Michael Kaplan attended Binghamton University where he studied Music, Theater, and Psychology. With his overriding passion for music, he opted not to pursue graduate work in psychology after he graduated with his B.A. in 1999. Ironically, Kaplan’s hobby was dabbling in web design, and while he began to push the envelope with his experiments in the digital music format, MIDI, after college he turned to his hobby to make money! Almost immediately after he graduated, Michael Kaplan joined Logical Design Solutions as the company’s Interactive Technology Developer.
After two years of working in the tech sector, Michael Kaplan decided it was time to give his musical dreams a real chance to flourish. He returned to Binghamton University where he taught as an assistant teacher of MIDI while he focused on composing. In mid-2002, Kaplan co-founded the eclectic band Pain Hertz, for which he provided the keyboards and lead vocals. To stay afloat while the band found its sound, Michael Kaplan went to work for Prudential Financial as their Front-End Web Developer. Kaplan may have influenced more people with his web design than he did with his music, as Pain Hertz broke up after a two year touring and composing stint, whereas the websites Kaplan worked on may still be found online!
Following the break-up of Pain Hertz, Michael Kaplan returned to the tech sector, going to work in the IT department of R.R. Donnelley. Kaplan has not given up his dreams of being a professional musician. Since 2009, he had been composing and producing music as Flaud Logic and he is working hard on an album. Until then, the tech sector shall continue to benefit from the work of this multitalented young man.
