Me in the Video = Vimeo
Even though YouTube is the largest and most popular video-sharing website, it is not the only one. Vimeo is one alternative for independent filmmakers. Vimeo has gained a large following but it will never be as big as YouTube because it limits the content on the site to videos that the users have made themselves.
The site is popular with musicians and independent filmmakers because it is an easy way to highlight their talents in a community of like-minded people. Users get good exposure on the site when they post their own videos. Many hope to use Vimeo as a springboard for their careers in film or music.
Vimeo announced that it would be completely redesigning its website soon. The video hosting site wants to make the experience it provides better than ever before and more easy to use. Probably the most noticeable change will be a larger video player covering most of the width of the page. Users will also discover new ways for them to share their unique content, easier navigation around the site, and more privacy features.
The easier navigation means that the search feature will be able to narrow down results better. Some of these advanced search features will include length of video, credits, and copyright. Another new feature of the site redesign is the related videos list. Available at the top of the screen, but not always visible, will be multiple lists – videos the user has liked, recommendations, and subscribed channel updates.
Vimeo says it has completely taken apart the site concepts in order to rebuild from the ground up and improve every aspect of the user experience. Vimeo has organized the site better, cleaned up the code, and made the site more efficient. As a result, users will also be able to upload more than one file at a time, something they could not do before the redesign.
Possibly, this website overhaul could be a way for Vimeo to prevent itself from copyright infringement lawsuits. With the government prosecuting file-sharing websites for copyright infringement, Vimeo obviously does not want to be next and they want to protect the Internet security of their users. The site may also be preparing for a major influx of users. It is only a short time before YouTube is forced to make drastic changes or be shut down because of all the copyright issues. Perhaps Vimeo believes it will become the next big, legal, thing in video sharing websites.
Whatever the possible reasons for the website redesign, Vimeo promises that it is not changing the core values of the site. It will continue to provide a great place to share self-made videos in high quality and it will continue to help users inspire one another with video and music.
