Making Etsy More Than A Sales Platform, Vanessa Bertozzi Is Building An Artistic Community!
One of the most important aspects of a sales-driven business is the ability to reach out to your customers. Having an interface for customers and vendors is especially important on Internet sales sites, notably online sites that are essentially a platform for vendors who are not directly connected to the site, like eBay and Amazon Stores. For the art sales website Etsy, the community aspect is exceptionally important. Artists and those who buy art tend to naturally form communities to discuss art – both the creation and acquisition of art. That makes Vanessa Bertozzi’s role at Etsy a very important one.
Vanessa Bertozzi is the Director of Community for Etsy. In that role and as the Editor-in-Chief of Storque (Etsy’s web-based magazine), Bertozzi was responsible for maintaining the blog on Etsy. Now, she has an active presence on the Etsy message boards, where she facilitates conversations about art and Etsy’s role in connecting art enthusiasts with up and coming artists. When there are changes in the Etsy platform, it is usually Vanessa Bertozzi who acts as a liaison between Etsy users, sellers, and the management of Etsy.
That Vanessa Bertozzi has ascended to the role of Director of Community is little surprise for such an outgoing, artistic individual. Vanessa Bertozzi graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Visual and Environmental Studies, with a minor in Art History. It was the artistic aspects of her education that Bertozzi began to focus on, as she found work at Picture Projects in 2001 as an Associate New Media Producer. Her passion for filmmaking then took her to Eyepop Productions, where Bertozzi became an Assistant Producer-Editor.
In 2004, Vanessa Bertozzi began to pursue graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the course of working on her Master’s of Science in Comparative Media Studies, Bertozzi worked on multimedia projects in Italy and Spain, in addition to the projects she produced in the United States. When she completed her degree in 2006, Vanessa Bertozzi was very much in demand. She went to work for IPG Media as a consultant and ethnographer. That was right before she was discovered by Etsy!
Since joining Etsy as the Editorial Director, Vanessa Bertozzi has helped the community on Etsy to grow, which made her transition to Director of Community a logical one. Using her talents to generate enthusiasm for art and Etsy, Vanessa Bertozzi is an effective leader for the Etsy community.
