Leading Acer, J.T. Wang Is A Powerful Executive
In the tech sector, companies grow and adapt to the challenges of the marketplace, or the company fails. Few major tech companies have had as rocky a road to success as Acer. While Acer manufactured personal computers that were very popular in China and Taiwan, it took quite a bit of time before Acer managed to successfully gain a significant market share of the U.S. and European pc market. To become competitive on a global scale, Acer had to reorganize and change the way it did business. In addition to designing computers that were subcontracted out for manufacture, Acer shuffled much of its management team. As part of the many changes at the company, J.T. Wang gained prominence and a better position at Acer.
J.T. Wang is the Chairman and CEO of Acer, Inc. Wang has served as both CEO and Chairman since 2008. In that time, he has worked to diversify Acer’s product lines away from just personal computers. Under J.T. Wang, Acer released the Iconia Tab A500 tablet computer and strengthened its position in the laptop computer market. With his guidance, Acer has remained in the top four global PC vendors (by volume shipped); in 2009, Acer was second only to HP! The strong sales of Acer computers is often attributed to the leadership of J.T. Wang.
As a young man, J.T. Wang attended National Taiwan University. There, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Recognizing that the key to his future success in the tech sector would not only be tied to the scientific and engineering portion of the jobs, Wang continued his education. J.T. Wang went to Taiwan’s National Cheng-Chi University for his graduate work. Earning his Executive MBA put J.T. Wang on a strong course to manage within the tech sector.
J.T. Wang began his corporate ascent when he went to work as a sales engineer at the forerunner to Acer, Multitech, in 1981. At Multitech, he very quickly proved his worth and ability and as the company was reorganized into Acer, J.T. Wang ascended the corporate ladder. By 1990, J.T. Wang had distinguished himself through his sales and management skills that he was promoted to President of Sales and Marketing for Acer! The speed of his rise within the company made it unsurprising that J.T. Wang might one day become CEO.
When Acer reorganized in 2000, J.T. Wang led the management team that initiated the new channel business model. As the new President of Acer, J.T. Wang streamlined the supply chain to Acer by more closely integrating the manufacturers and suppliers with which Acer worked. When the new business model worked, J.T. Wang was promoted to Chairman and CEO of Acer. He has served, on and off, in that capacity since 2005.
Rising up the corporate ladder to lead one of the world’s largest computer companies, J.T. Wang is an inspiration to anyone working in the tech sector.
