Laughing All The Way To Serious Success, Ricky Van Veen Co-Founded CollegeHumor!
Sometimes, the best ideas on the Internet are some of the simplest ones. In the case of Internet humor, the evolution from simple shared comics e-mailed to friends to websites that collected memes to full-on Internet comedy channels is an intriguing one. Too often, Internet users take for granted all of the work that goes into forming a humor-based website and making it successful. For Ricky Van Veen, the challenges of establishing a viable Internet-based humor site are familiar; he runs CollegeHumor.com.
Ricky Van Veen is a young Internet entrepreneur who co-founded CollegeHumor.com with his friend from high school, Josh Abramson. When Ricky Van Veen helped to create the site in 1999, he was hoping to create a unique advertising portal that would attract advertisers looking to sell products and services to college students. Van Veen got his wish; CollegeHumor.com is one of the most popular sites on the Internet for college-age students and its revenue stream is heavily influenced by advertisers seeking to reach that key demographic!
While attending Wake Forest University, he and Abramson came up with their plan and the CollegeHumor.com website. By the time Ricky Van Veen graduated in 2003, CollegeHumor.com was getting millions of unique hits per month and was becoming a relevant way for advertisers to reach college students. As the funds began to flow in to improve and upgrade CollegeHumor.com, Van Veen continued to direct the content, which began to win the site awards. But even as CollegeHumor.com began to achieve the success Van Veen hoped for, Ricky Van Veen looked to the future and began work on other projects.
Some of the projects Ricky Van Veen launched while CollegeHumor.com was still growing included BustedTees.com and Vimeo.com, which continues to grow. Van Veen also produced three books based on CollegeHumor’s comedy and in 2009, he went to work on a television version of CollegeHumor. MTV aired The CollegeHumor Show in 2009 as part of their attempt to create new, non-reality, programming. Ricky Van Veen appeared on the show as an actor, in addition to writing and executive producing the show.
Not one who is content to rest on his laurels, Ricky Van Veen continues to launch business enterprises that have a remarkable success rate. Taking its cue from CollegeHumor, Van Veen formed Notional, a production company that creates entertainment programming for both the Internet and traditional television. As CEO for Notional, Ricky Van Veen helped develop shows that were aired on Comedy Central, Bravo and the Food Network.
While Ricky Van Veen might be preoccupied with bringing laughter to the world, his methods are undeniably successful, making him one of the coolest young entrepreneurs of the Internet.
