Kinect Gets Serious, Thanks To Some New Start-Ups!

The tech sector has a way of recognizing good ideas and making sure those good ideas continue to develop, even if their initial application was very specific.  In the case of Microsoft’s Kinect, the motion sensor technology was originally developed for gaming.  In fact, the Kinect helped the Xbox 360 compete against other platforms that utilize motion technology, most notably the Wii.  But Kinect is no longer just for gaming and while Microsoft may not be developing the new uses for Kinect, the company is fostering the non-game growth of the system.  Microsoft provided grant money to start-ups to develop new products and applications using Kinect.  While none of these products are market-ready, the most exciting highlights of Microsoft’s Kinect-related program are:

Kimetric. Arguably the company with the most marketable Kinect-based product, Kimetric uses Kinect sensors in a retail environment.  By tracking customers and employees using Kinect sensors, the Kimetric system would allow store security to keep tabs on shoplifting even in areas where their cameras have limited coverage.  Once a customer is suspected of shoplifting, apprehending them may be easier if the security guards are trained to read the Kinect feed and can anticipate just which exit the culprit will head to!  Far from being playful, Kimetric’s system offers a big solution to a real problem in the retail environment.

Zebcare.  Gone will be the days of “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” with Zebcare’s use of Kinect sensors.  Zebcare wants to use Kinect sensors as a monitoring system for senior citizens and the application is one of the potentially smartest.  Home health care monitoring systems could use such a system to respond faster than ever before through the use of Zebcare’s system.  Moreover, using Zebcare’s Kinect system in nursing and assisted living homes could dramatically cut down on response times and lawsuits, providing both a better living environment for seniors and improving profitability for the health care providers.

NConnex. NConnex wants to use the Kinect system in a much more familiar way.  Their product would allow you to make 3-D models of rooms or your entire house.  You would then be able to alter your rooms either by redecorating or entirely reconfiguring your rooms.  The thought behind the NConnex program is that manipulating rooms in a 3-D environment may make it easier to process the changes you want to make in the real world.

Voxon.  Also on the creation end, Voxon is creating a digital environment through which other programmers will be able to create 3-D environments.  Voxon is essentially creating the framework for holographic entertainment and education environments using Kinect sensors and technology.

With Kinect inspiring such movement-based and holographic-based programming, Kinect is rapidly becoming an even more exciting system to use.
