Keeping Electronic Arts Competitive In A Changing Market, Gabrielle Toledano Hires The Best!

With the rise of Zynga, a video game developer that has effectively utilized Facebook as a platform for social gaming, traditional video game companies seem to have a lot to worry about.  After all, as Zynga’s market share grows, that company diminishes the market share of other video game companies.  But Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello is not sweating the completion; he has an ace in the hole.  That ace is Gabrielle Toledano.

Gabrielle Toledano serves as Executive Vice President of Human Resources at Electronic Arts.  Toledano attended Stanford University where she earned a B.A. in Humanities and her Master’s Degree in Education.  After a year abroad, Gabrielle Toledano joined the human resources department of Microsoft, where she found a new focus for her life and career.  Toledano left Microsoft to work as Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Siebel Systems.  She joined Electronic Arts in 2006 and Gabrielle Toledano was promptly promoted to Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Talent Officer.

As the head of Human Resources at Electronic Arts, Gabrielle Toledano is responsible for hiring the best and brightest computer programmers.  It is only by hiring and retaining the smartest, most savvy programmers that EA retains its dominance in the video game market.  Toledano has a strong track record of great hires, especially in the last two years as Electronic Arts has grown to fend off Zynga.

Toledano is especially fascinated by the emerging markets – like games for social networks and video gaming on mobile computing devices – and she has been tailoring her hiring to meet both the current needs and emerging demands of the video game market.  One of the massive efforts that required Toledano’s eye for talent was the new Star Wars: The Old Republic massive multi-player online role playing game.  The success of that endeavor hinged, in part, on Toledano hiring innovative programmers.  Her efforts clearly paid off as the game is very popular!

Going forward, Electronic Arts is staffing up to meet the demands of competition.  The company’s philosophy is one that marries quantity and quality.  Zynga is in an uphill battle for improving its market position and Toledano continues to make the way steeper.  Gabrielle Toledano is spearheading an effort by EA to produce more games, improve the subscription games the company has to retain and grow the player base, and dive into the emerging market of social network gaming that Zynga has dominated so far.  As a result, Toledano has made the ambitious goal of hiring 5000 new workers for Electronic Arts by the end of 2020.  Toledano is not only hiring workers who fit that business model, but she is looking for people who fit the corporate culture of EA.  As such, Toledano is looking for creativity as well as a strong work ethic.

Given that Electronic Arts has lost the least market share of any of the big video game companies to Zynga and EA remains the employer of choice for many young programmers, clearly Gabrielle Toledano is doing a fantastic job!
