How Far Can A Bachelor’s Degree Take You? Just Ask IGT’s CEO Patti S. Hart!
In the United States, students learn that there are two avenues to success: connections and higher education. While nepotism and interpersonal relationships certainly have their roles in advancing one’s career, nothing takes the place of hard work. But even those who work hard are told the only way to truly get ahead is by pursuing higher education. The technology sector confounds those expectations by advancing educated individuals who have great ideas and needed skills, as opposed to just higher degrees. One executive who has benefitted from corporations who value experience over degrees is Patti S. Hart.
Patti S. Hart is the Chief Executive Officer of International Game Technology, the maker of video slot machines, like Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania! Hart joined the Board of Directors of IGT in 2006 and ascended to CEO of IGT in 2009. Since becoming CEO, Patti Hart has expanded the influence of IGT in casinos and promoted the video game versions of IGT games, making International Game Technology even more profitable.
After receiving her B.S. in Marketing and Economics from Illinois State University, Hart immediately began working for United Technologies Corporation as a consultant. That position served as a stepping stone which took Hart from small telecommunications companies to Sprint and then DirecTV Broadband. In her tenure at Sprint, Hart advanced from an Area Vide President all the way up to President and COO of the Long Distance Division. That experience was a key factor in IGT hiring her, as video slot machines rely heavily upon a casino’s internal communication’s system. Coming to IGT with both technical experience and business knowledge made Hart exceptionally attractive to International Game Technology.
Since taking over the highest position at IGT, Patti Hart has put her extensive experience in the telecommunications industry to good use for the company. Under Hart, IGT has developed and released the exceptionally flexible platform sbX Tier One. That platform allows casinos to buy new IGT video slot machines and connect them to servers within the casino without forcing the casino to transform their entire floor to IGT machines. That flexibility has allowed IGT to exploit many new markets within the gambling world by encouraging casinos to slowly build up their inventory of IGT games. That approach has been working well for IGT as its stock has gone up significantly since Hart became CEO!
In addition to running International Game Technology, Patti Hart sits on the Boards of Yahoo, the American Gaming Association and Duke University. Hart’s connections and ability to lead a profitable company are impressive for anyone and almost unheard of for someone with “only” a Bachelor’s degree!
