Google Play Store Set To Compete Against Amazon And The Apple iTunes Store!
At last week’s Google I/O conference, many new products were introduced, not all of them ready for the marketplace just yet. Most of the products were very much to be expected from the search giant who now seems to have its hands in everything. Google, through its Android operating system has become more associated with gadgets in recent years, instead of just being considered an Internet software/search pioneer. As a result, the fact that the I/O conference was used to generate enthusiasm (and preorders) for new products like Google Glass and Nexus devices was predictable. What was truly audacious was the way Google declared war on Amazon and the Apple iTunes store by unveiling a new shopping platform: Google Play Store.
The Google Play Store is a digital marketplace, filled with a rapidly-growing number of movies, television shows, musical works, and books. Just as Amazon has steadily beefed up its digital library of movies and, at least as important, television programs so that many new programs are available on the platform hours after they originally air, Google has worked hard to make similar strategic deals. NBC Universal, Sony, and ABC Studios have already made arrangements with the Google Play Store, so their digital programs are already online through the new service. Coming with so much content already loaded into the store, the Google Play Store has a lot of potential for a strong start.
Google is making another direct shot at Amazon – and the Barnes & Noble Nook – by providing magazines for mobile devices through the Google Play Store. Until now, users of Android-based mobile devices have had to use an e-reader from one of Google’s competitors to read magazines on their Android smartphone or tablet computer. With the integration of magazines to Google Play, Android mobile devices are being opened up to the .pdf-based magazine formats that e-readers have utilized. Given the priority many hardware manufacturers for Android-based mobile devices have placed on superior screens and graphics renditions, digital magazines from the Google Play Store might look better than ever!
While it is likely to take some time before all of the movies, music, and magazines are available for Android-based devices, Google is working hard to make sure that the Google Play Store interacts seamlessly with other Google products, like the forthcoming Google TV. The Google Play Store is off to an ambitious start.
