Google May Soon Provide Cloud Storage

What is one of the few online services that Google does not yet have? That may be a difficult question with the dozens of products and services Google offers, but the answer is a cloud drive. There are already ways to store information on some Google services, but comprehensive Google cloud storage may be available soon.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Google will be releasing the cloud-storage service “Drive” in the coming months. However, the report was not very specific about its information and Google’s spokespeople have not made any comments about the supposed new service.

There have been rumors about a possible Google cloud service since 2007, when Google called it “G Drive”. The service was ready to launch that year, but never did. In 2009, another surge of rumors said that the G Drive would be coming soon, but again, nothing happened. This may be another round of rumors, or it may finally be the real thing.

Google has been updating its services so that they incorporate online storage for some time now. With last year’s release of Google Music and the ability to store music on the web through Google, it makes sense that the company might want to integrate its services. We have been seeing that Google wants to more seamlessly allow users to move between services with the integration of all Google Accounts and the combination of its privacy policy.

By releasing an online cloud storage service now, it could combine the data users have spread out over their Google+, YouTube channel, Google docs, Google music, and other services. It would make the Google experience fluid, seamless, and efficient in a way it currently is not.

According to the Wall Street Journal’s sources, the Drive service would be free to most people for storage. Only those who wanted to store large amounts of data would have to pay for the service. It would be similar to the service provided by Dropbox, with tiered pricing and connectivity between all your devices. The advantage Drive would have over Apple’s iCloud is that it could work with any Internet capable device.

For users who have data spread out over all of Google’s services, an online cloud storage service would add a great amount of efficiency. For people who do not yet have a Google account, free cloud storage could be a reason for them to create an account. Right now Google is in a great position to release cloud storage for its users, even if the current reports are only another round of rumors.
