Giving Clearwater Something To Sing About, Hope F. Cochran!

Because the advertising for some of the big telecommunications companies is so prevalent, one might think that it was one of the giants of telecommunications that developed and founded the first 4G network.  As it turns out, though, it was not Verizon or AT&T or another nationwide mobile phone network that created the first 4G network in the United States.  No, that honor goes to a little company called Clearwire.  Clearwire could not have developed and initiated their 4G network had it not been for Hope F. Cochran.

Hope Cochran is the Chief Financial Officer of Clearwire Corporation.  Cochran joined Clearwire in 2005 and she was instrumental in seeing the company through its initial public offering of stock.  That IPO raised $11.5 billion and funded the establishment of the Clearwire 4G network.  Without Cochran’s savvy and business acumen, Clearwire would not have been able to establish the 4G network and show the companies in Big Telecom how it was done!

Hope Cochrane came to Clearwire Corporation ready to take the financial reins and ride a small company into the big time, even if her original interests might not have made such a career obvious.  Cochran studied music at Stanford University and was a classically trained vocalist.  While she spent her early college experience singing and performing as an opera singer, she was not destined to stay an artist long.  Instead, she continued her education at Stanford and graduated with a Master’s of Business in Economics.

The decision to move from the vocal arts to the world of high finance served Hope Cochran well.  She was one of the Founders and Chief Financial Officer of the software provider SkillsVillage before it was bought by PeopleSoft in 2001.  PeopleSoft was so impressed by the job Cochran had been doing that they made her Controller of the Americas Sales Operations.  Hope Cochran stayed in that position until she ascended to CFO of Evant Incorporated.  Cochran remained at Evant until Clearwire hired her away, attracted to her extensive financial experience in tech sector jobs.

Since her promotion to Chief Financial Officer, Hope Cochran has shepherded Clearwire through some trying times.  Sprint made a strategic alliance with a competitor, but Cochran managed the potential crisis with such skill and savvy that FierceWireless named her the Most Influential Woman in Wireless for 2011!  With a powerhouse like Hope Cochran on their side, Clearwire is set to finance their next big innovation.
