Every Wonder Who Those “Lobbyists” Are? For Comcast, One Is Melissa Maxfield!

With the 2012 election cycle heating up, more and more voters will be hearing about lobbyists and corporate influence in Washington, D.C.  Every industry has lobbyists, including the technology sector.  Few companies, however, keep their lobbyists in prominent positions.  Comcast Corporation, the nation’s largest cable, communications and entertainment company, keeps their principle lobbyist as one of their corporate executives!  Her name is Melissa Maxfield.

Melissa Maxfield’s official title is Senior Vice President of Federal Government Affairs for Comcast.  Comcast, as a large communications company, has a keen interest in legislation involving copyright protection, Internet distribution and manufacturing relationships with subcontractors in foreign countries.  In order to ensure that Comcast’s interests are respected and existing laws are enforced, Melissa Maxfield spends much of her time for Comcast in Washington, D.C.

Maxfield joined Comcast after a surprisingly extensive career in politics for someone so young.  After graduating from Randolph Macon’s Woman’s College with a Bachelor’s of Political Science, Melissa Maxfield went to work on Bill Nelson’s 1990 gubernatorial campaign in Florida.  Discovering a real passion for democratic politics, Maxfield spent the 1990s working for several Democrats and for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.  In 1999, she joined Senator Tom Daschle’s staff and she became a trusted aid to him.

In 2003, Melissa Maxfield joined Comcast.  In 2008, when the political landscape shifted, Maxfield was promoted to lead Comcast’s efforts in Washington, D.C.  With her Democratic connections, Maxfield was more of an asset in representing Comcast’s interests to leaders in the Federal Government.  Since her promotion, Maxfield has worked tirelessly to lobby for stronger copyright enforcements on the Internet.  Comcast was a principle architect of the Stop Online Piracy Act and Melissa Maxfield lobbied on the Hill in favor of SOPA.

Even with the Stop Online Piracy Act and its House counterpart, the Protect IP Act, effectively shelved due to coordinated citizen action, Melissa Maxfield’s successes for Comcast far outnumber any perceived failures.  Maxfield’s efforts have led to continued deregulation in the telecommunications industry.  As well Maxfield’s influence has effectively blocked budding ventures that would allow consumers to pay only for the cable channels they want to watch; as opposed to massive bundles of channels cable providers like Comcast sell.

With the online frontier constantly changing, new legislation is always being proposed to regulate the Internet and the telecommunications industry.  Melissa Maxfield expertly serves Comcast’s interests.
