Developing A Popular Game From An Unsuccessful Attempt, Efim Voinov Illustrates Resiliency And Cleverness!
Sometimes, the best ideas come from the ashes of a previous idea that simply did not work out. When ZeptoLabs began making computer games, the chief programmer worked very hard on a physics software engine. That engine was programmed to realistically mimic how objects fell based upon a player cutting the ropes that suspended the object. ZeptoLabs went with a different game mechanic for their first release, Parachute Ninja. However, the programmer who worked on the initial version of the game thought there might be a way to use that game engine. That tenacious programmer was Efim Voinov!
Efim Voinov is a software developer and serves ZeptoLabs as the company’s technical director. As Chief Technology Officer, Efim Voinov is responsible for developing the new programs from ZeptoLabs as well as adapting the games in the company’s library to different platforms. Given that Efim Voinov has worked on mobile video games on almost every major platform, he is ideally suited to the task. While his brother and co-founder, Semyon, focuses on the business aspects of ZeptoLabs, Efim continues to deal with the software generation.
ZeptoLabs is not the first joint venture between Efim and Semyon. The brothers worked together on a software company called MuddyGlass. Efim, however, left MuddyGlass when the Moscow office of Reaxion Corp offered him a position. At Reaxion, Efim learned an extensive amount about programming for mobile devices and other computer devices. After six years of working for Reaxion, Efim rejoined his brother and the two founded ZeptoLabs.
Influenced deeply by the success of Rovio’s Angry Birds, Efim Voinov decided to give developing a physics puzzle game a chance after ZeptoLabs had a minor commercial success with Parachute Ninja. Still enamored with the original mechanic he designed, Efim attempted to build a fun physics puzzle game around his rope-cutting mechanic. Shortly thereafter, Cut The Rope was created, it sold more than a million downloads within a week and the rest, as they say, is history!
None of this would have happened had it not been for Efim Voinov. Voinov built a solid platform for a game, even if it took a few iterations before its genius could be fully realized. That Efim built such a cool platform from scratch is unsurprising considering he has been writing computer programs since he was eight years old. A lot has changed in computer technology and Efim’s life since his parents provided him with his first computer. In addition to his many business ventures over the years, Efim studied hard and earned his Master’s in Computer Science from the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics.
With the breakout success of Cut The Rope, ZeptoLabs is expanding and merchandising the game’s protagonist in other mediums – like plush toys, comic books, etc. Efim Voinov remains dedicated to the software and as new expansions for Cut The Rope are released, his talents continue to be realized.
