Defecting From Google To Make StumbleUpon Work: Japjit Tulsi!
As companies rise and fall in Silicon Valley, it is no surprise that the big tech companies frequently see employees migrate from one popular company to the next big thing. While some of the big tech companies actively poach employees from their competitors, other tech companies seem to just attract a lot of employees from the companies with greater name recognition. In the case of StumbleUpon, the comparatively small Internet company has a surprisingly high number of employees formerly employed at Google. One of the most significant ex-Google workers who is now vital to StumbleUpon is Japjit Tulsi.
Japjit Tulsi made a lateral move in 2011 when he became StumbleUpon’s Vice President of Engineering from being Google’s Director of Engineering. While at Google, Tulsi was responsible for creating Google Analytics, which is one of the standard-bearers of online traffic analysis. That level of programming genius made him very attractive to StumbleUpon. Prior to Google, Japjit Tulsi was a part of Microsoft’s executive development program. At Microsoft, Tulsi served as a group manager in the engineering department. Prior to Microsoft, Tulsi studied at Punjab University where he abandoned a law career in favor of the tech sector.
In coming to work for StumbleUpon, which is smaller than his prior employers YouTube, Google, and Microsoft, Japjit Tulsi fell in love with the corporate culture of the Internet’s rising star. At StumbleUpon, Tulsi found a corporate culture that rewarded both creativity and innovation. As the head of the Engineering Department, Japjit Tulsi has been challenged to expand his talents once again. Engineering for StumbleUpon requires Tulsi to meet very different challenges than he experienced while creating and promoting Google Analytics. Tulsi’s ideas on how to run an engineering department have given him an opportunity to hone his managerial style while still playing with the computers he has loved since he was five years-old.
When he is not at the office, Japjit Tulsi does activities that distance him greatly from his work environment. By playing golf and flying planes, Tulsi both develops new solutions to his work problems and relaxes his mind enough to be truly receptive to hearing good ideas from his team when they pitch to him. This management style is not necessarily typical of tech companies, but it works extraordinarily well for Japjit Tulsi and StumbleUpon!
Japjit Tulsi led teams that made some of the most significant websites even better. With that type of raw talent, it is exciting to see where he will take StumbleUpon!
