Casual Gaming Rocks the Hardcore World

Online gaming has taken a few major turns in recent years, especially in terms of type of players and company business models. Until recently, most games on the Internet were for hardcore gamers. Now, anyone can find a game online that he or she will enjoy playing.

Social networking games have created a window into the gaming world for casual players by creating thousands of games that are free and very easy to play. These games come with a revolutionary business model that other types of games are slowly adopting.

Massively Multiplayer Online games, known as MMOs, are a type of game in which players from all over the world can play the game together in an online world. MMOs can be any type of game, but Role Playing Games (or RPGs) are the most popular. These MMORPGs, like the well-known World of Warcraft game, are beginning to change.

With the advent of casual gaming, players from social networking sites are trying other games. Many of them find their way into MMORPGs and, discovering that they enjoy this type of gaming, continue to play. The problem arises when they realize that there is a monthly fee to continue to play the game.

As game developers realized they were losing these new players, they decided to take their new business model from the casual games. Players have begun to call these “free to play, pay to win” games and the MMOs took that description to heart.

While social networking games do not actually give paying players an untenable advantage over others, many MMOs using this model are creating a divide between players who pay and those who do not. By using micro transactions, “free to play, pay to win” MMO games are beginning to abuse the new system by creating overpowered items that are only available to paying players. In a situation where players have to fight each other, this inequality creates problems for people who cannot afford to pay to play.

Many people, in order to circumvent the system, try downloading pirated copies of the game or even items from the game. This comes with many risks because it is very common for malware and viruses to hide in illegal downloads. Many people who were just trying to play a game suddenly find themselves in need of the professional virus removal services from Rescuecom.

In a perfect world, game developers would not abuse the “free to play, pay to win” system, but instead take the spirit of the business model to heart and provide pay items that boost game play but which do not create an inequality in the player base. That is the way this model was meant to be used, and if the developers use it that way, the future of gaming looks bright. Unfortunately, if they continue to abuse it, online gaming could easily slip back into the realm of ‘only for hardcore gamers.’
