Attack Of The Clones! The Coolest Pinterest-style Sites!
If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Pinterest has a lot to feel flattered about! In addition to enjoying a lot of press in the online media, Pinterest is the concept that many new social networking sites appear to be trying to imitate. Pinterest allows you to “pin” any image you find on the Internet to your bulletin board on Pinterest to share with your friends and followers. You and your friends may comment on the pictures and the site inspires some very lively discussions.
If Pinterest is a good idea, then others have truly leapt on that idea to attempt to tailor the concept to niche markets. Almost every day, it seems, there is a new online social network that is attempting to refine the Pinterest concept for very specific audiences. With so many new sites like that popping up, it can be hard to figure out which ones are actually worthwhile. What follows are the coolest of the new, Pinterest-style Internet social networks!
Shopalong. Shopalong actually bills itself as “Pinterest for online shopping.” Despite the direct reference and the fact that the site does not have the ideal URL for the service, Shopalong actually has the strongest concept of any of the Pinterest-style websites. With its easy-to-use interface, whenever you are shopping on the Internet and want to remember and share something that strikes your fancy, you can pin it to your Shopalong board. This can be especially useful as friends and family can discuss your purchases before you make them. Also, you can share your enthusiasm for a product after you find it online and give friends and family concrete buying advice for what you might want!
Grooblin. Grooblin is like a visual version of the now-defunct Proust. Proust was designed to create a meaningful narrative of life’s events and was a brilliant idea for a social network that simply did not catch on. Grooblin has a similar concept. When you are going to an event or attend a social event, you post images to your Grooblin wall in order to make a permanent record of the event. This is, potentially, a great way to share events with your friends and family.
Urbantag. Coming out of its beta testing, Urbantag provides users with a visual guide to cool places they have been. Urbantag, like Shopalong, has an inherent usefulness that some of the other Pinterest-style sites lack. Getting advice about travel or sharing travel memories in an interesting way, can be very difficult. With Urbantag, you can post pictures of places you are planning to visit and get advice from friends who might know if it is worth your time and money to travel there. Your friends, upon seeing the pictures you post, may also give you good advice about nearby places or activities at the place you are thinking of visiting. After you travel, Urbantag may be a great way to share your adventures with friends in a visually-exciting way!
If you like the concept, look and feel of Pinterest, but want a more focused social networking experience, the specialized sites in the Pinterest model may serve you better!
