Arguably The Coolest Site The Government Has Ever Created: NOAA.gov!
When one thinks of cool products and cool places to visit on the Internet, the U.S. Government is hardly a name near the top of the list. When many people think of the federal government, they think of the IRS (often negatively) or political in-fighting. The Federal government actually runs several vital, completely apolitical, organizations. One of them is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And, believe it or not, NOAA has one of the coolest websites on the Internet!
NOAA.gov is the essential, government-run, weather website. If you rely upon your local news station for weather predictions and updates, you can cut out the middleman and bookmark NOAA.gov instead; not only do many local news agencies use the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website, but they upload their raw data to NOAA as well. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration coordinates data from tens of thousands of locations around the United States each day. With that amount of raw data, NOAA can create far more realistic weather models than any local or state weather service.
The highlight of NOAA.gov is certainly the weather finder. In the upper left hand corner of the NOAA.gov homepage is a simple search bar. By entering either a city and state or a ZIP Code, NOAA.gov provides both hard data and simple analysis for users. The hard data can be exceptionally useful for farmers who know their land, crops, and how various weather conditions will affect their livelihood. They – and weather professionals – can look at the detailed satellite maps and raw statistics and form their own conclusions that meet their unique needs. For everyday users, NOAA.gov provides convenient analysis, with clear graphics. With one glance at the weather finder page, you can find out what the highs and lows for a given day will be, as well as the dominant weather pattern of the day.
In addition to having incredible weather models, NOAA.gov features pretty incredible features. For major atmospheric, oceanic, and even astronomical, events, NOAA.gov posts photo essays using images gathered by public resources. So, for example, when Venus recently passed in front of the sun, NOAA was able to post images of the entire journey, along with analysis of how it was affecting weather patterns on Earth. NOAA.gov also provides public safety tips for swimming in the summer and driving in the winter snow. As a government resource, some of the best minds in the field of meteorology contribute articles, features, and analysis to NOAA.gov.
No matter what your political bent, it is hard to argue that the Federal government is not doing something very right with NOAA.gov!
