Amber Lee Ettinger, Internet Celebrity Dedicated To The Medium!

Internet videos have made overnight celebrities.  Most of the viral videos that have launched obscure people into the collective consciousness of popular culture have resulted in a very fast rise and fall for the subject of the video.  In fact, there are very few subjects of Internet viral videos who have had real success following their peak popularity in a viral video.  One of the few to actually have a successful career following their viral video’s inevitable flameout is Amber Lee Ettinger.

Amber Lee Ettinger grew up as a dedicated student who was deeply interested in fashion.  After high school, she was accepted to New York City’s prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology, where she began to study fashion and clothing design.  At that point in her life, she wanted to be an entrepreneur and design her own clothing line.  After a brief stint on the beauty pageant circuit – she was Miss NYC in the Miss Hawaiian Tropic pageant – she set her sights on the performance arts.  Ettinger appeared in a music video for the John Popper Project and appeared on a very popular segment for the Internet show The Onion News Network.

Ettinger’s big break, though, came when she appeared on the Internet in a viral video.  The video’s producer, Rick Friedrich, hired Amber Lee Ettinger based on her modeling experience for the music video for the song “I Got a Crush . . . on Obama.”  The novelty song was a gag and BarelyPolitical.com released the video to YouTube.  However, the campy video exploded unexpectedly with popularity and Amber Lee Ettinger was suddenly an Internet sensation.

Recognizing that such fame was likely to be short-lived, Ettinger used her sudden popularity on the Internet to try to achieve some of her other career goals.  While remaining in the public eye on the Internet by performing in parodies of the “I Got a Crush . . . on Obama” video through 2008, Ettinger applied herself to broader entertainment goals.  While her name was still fresh on the Internet, bolstered by performing for more Barely Political videos, Amber Lee Ettinger released an album showcasing her musical abilities.  Recognizing that the Internet was what gave her popularity, Ettinger released Queen of the Web only as a digital music download.  The album had moderate success and cemented Ettinger as one of the Internet’s reining divas.

Since then, Amber Lee Ettinger has returned to her fashion roots.  Incorporating her performing abilities honed on the Internet, Ettinger is now a fashion correspondent on WPIX in New York City.  She has no plans to make any political Internet videos for the 2012 presidential contest.
