Amazon’s New Brick and Mortar Plans

Amazon.com is the largest online retailer in America and the company has made huge profits from its ability to sell almost any product to customers all over the world. Over the last year, though, Amazon has begun to focus more on eBooks. The company has even gotten to the point of announcing plans to publish exclusively on and for Amazon.

Even with that surprising news, very few people would have predicted Amazon’s next plan – physical stores! Amazon is now planning to create physical stores in a similar manner to the Apple stores.

The plan is to start out with one store in Seattle, near the company headquarters, that will focus on selling the Kindle eReaders and the Kindle Fire. Depending on the performance of the first store, the company will begin opening more stores across the country. According to GoodeReader.com, the stores will be small boutiques that only sell eReaders, tablets, and Amazon Exclusive ebooks.

As an online retailer, Amazon only needs to pay taxes in a state where there is a distribution center. There are currently Amazon distribution centers in only 10 states, including Washington, but the proposed stores would eventually be in every state. At that point, Amazon will need to pay a range of taxes it has never had to deal with before. The company will need to figure out how to maintain profits while paying for the upkeep of stores, employee wages, and the taxes that go along with those stores.

If Amazon is modeling its stores after Apple stores, will there be technical experts available on hand to provide computer support for the Kindle Fire and other Kindle eReaders? That would speed up the computer repair process considerably for those who rely on the manufacturer for computer support. Rescuecom’s Computer support technicians can provide immediate online or over-the-phone support 24/7/365 if a Kindle user encounters a problem, which is faster and more convenient than driving to an Amazon store.

Opening physical stores is an unprecedented move for an online retailer like Amazon. Why is the company suddenly deciding to change the way it does business? Perhaps it is an attempt to capitalize on Apple’s success with boutique stores. Maybe Amazon simply wants a new venue in which to sell their tablet and eReaders. Either way, Amazon will fundamentally change as a company when the first brick and mortar store opens later this year.
