All Hopes Rest On Better Batteries!
Power. Power is what every company wants, on one level or another, and it is the defining factor of success in the technology sector. The computer that is the most powerful, as defined by speed, computing ability and consistency, is considered the very best one on the market. But more and more, the computing ability of smartphones, laptop computers and consumer electronics at all levels are at the mercy of battery power.
Battery power, or the failures of it, nearly sunk the release of the Apple iPhone 4S. Apple worked quickly to solve the battery problems in the new release and even revealed a battery problem with first-generation iPod Nanos to prevent future customer service problems. Batteries store energy to keep electronic devices going and right now, it is one of the hottest industries in which to be. Three of the most significant battery projects are:
The Notrees Windpower Project Battery Experiment. In Texas, the Notrees Windpower Project is experimenting with a 36-megawatt battery. This incredibly innovation, if successful, could have sweeping ramifications through the entire energy industry. Having an industrial battery that could supply power and support a primary power grid during peak times could strengthen the source of electricity for business and residential customers throughout the United States. This is, arguably, the largest-scale, most important battery project occurring and the potential to revolutionize the renewable energy industry is incredible.
The Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Battery Center. The Holland, Michigan automotive company is the first one in the United States to actually manufacture lithium-ion batteries for automotive use. Supported by Federal grant money, the Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Battery Center is building better battery cells for American automobiles. As their experiments progress, the manufacture of new, more advanced automobile batteries will commence. The Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Battery Center is laying the framework for more intense and more consistent hybrid automobile manufacturing in the United States!
Leyden Energy. While industrial and automotive batteries are exceptionally important, one of the big races in the battery world is to create a longer-lasting, more reliable battery for smartphones. Leyden Energy is leading the charge (pun intended) and after a twenty million dollar round of financing last year, just announced they will have their first batteries on the market later in 2012. Leyden Energy has gone back to the well to use entirely new chemistry in their forthcoming batteries. This, they promise, will allow them to manufacture a battery that lasts twice as long as conventional smartphone batteries, while taking up half the space of batteries with similar capacity!
Three U.S. companies are innovating the next generation of batteries and this is a race the United States must win to retain any dominance in the electronics and technology fields.
