Advancing Through Cunning Alliances, Renee J. James Expertly Manages Intel’s Software And Services Group.
There are very few companies in the technology sector that invest heavily in research and development anymore. Ironically, for an industry that has seen the greatest growth come from spontaneous invention, the computer and consumer electronics markets have stopped investing as much time, money, and resources on pure discovery. While most big businesses in the technology sector work to refine already-existing technologies, Intel continues to innovate. Leading the software development efforts of Intel is Renee J. James.
Renee J. James serves Intel as one of the company’s Senior Vice Presidents. James acts as the General Manager of the Software and Services Group, which is a key division of Intel. Intel, which develops advanced computer hardware, relies upon the Software and Services Group to ensure that the hardware they create in the laboratories functions with the dominant software platforms on the market. In some ways, Renee J. James works as a corporate ambassador between Intel and every major OS and software provider in the world!
The role of corporate ambassador – both within Intel and in Intel’s dealings with other companies – is one in which Renee James is well-suited. After receiving her Bachelor’s of Science in International Business from the University of Oregon, James earned her MBA from the University of Oregon in 1992. While working toward her Master’s, James joined Intel. Her first position at Intel had her managing the division that was developing the very popular 386 line of motherboards.
James grew with Intel, distinguishing herself as the technical assistant to Intel’s CEO, Andy Grove. When Grove left Intel, James remained, taking on the position of Chief Operating Officer of Intel Online Solutions. Before taking over the Senior Vice President position as the General Manager of Software and Services, Renee James was the General Manager of the Microsoft Program Group at Intel. There, she insured a seamless function relationship between Intel’s hardware and Microsoft’s emerging products.
As the General Manager of Software and Services, one of the big triumphs for Renee James was in establishing a formal relationship between Intel and McAfee, the software development company. James is credited with laying the framework that allowed Intel to buy McAfee and integrate the powerful software of McAfee with the Intel microarchitecture platforms. That deal was a huge acquisition for Intel that brought together two of the most significant research and development teams working in the technology sector today!
With all of her experience working with Intel’s emerging technologies, it is no surprise that Renee James was able to recognize the value of McAfee and work to get Intel to buy it out.
