A Vehicle with Wings
There are hundreds of choices when shopping for a new car. You have to decide on type (car, truck, SUV, etc), maker (Ford, Nissan, Honda, etc), price range, size, model, and so many other options. On the other hand, if you are looking into electric cars or hybrid models, there are very few models to choose from among the large car manufacturers. However, smaller car companies are introducing new models of electric cars, for instance: Tesla Motors’ new Model X.
The Model X is a revolutionary type of vehicle. It does not fit into any of the vehicle categories we have – it is not quite an SUV or a minivan, but something in between. The car can seat up to seven adults because of its third row of seats, but it is the size and shape of an SUV.
The reason Tesla Motors can house three rows of seats in an SUV is that the motor and the battery are underneath the car. As an electric vehicle, the Model X relies on a large, flat battery pack that runs the length of the car. The designers placed the motor between the rear wheels and, optionally, an additional motor between the front wheels for an all-wheel drive Model X. This is only possible in an electric car, which has a much smaller motor than gasoline powered vehicles.
The battery placement gives the Model X a low center of gravity and provides increased stability and better handling on the road. By putting most of the components underneath the car, Tesla Motors opened up a large amount of space available for the vehicle.
That extra space lends itself to the vehicle’s most interesting design feature – falcon-wing doors. The doors on the Model X lift upwards from a hinge on the top of the car. They provide a larger opening than any other four-door model and an adult can stand in the car while the door is open without hitting his or her head on the door. The innovative design allows the doors to open more easily in smaller spaces because of an extra hinge in the middle of the doors.
The Model X also features a 17-inch touchscreen display that is equipped to provide all the information the driver needs, as well as make phone calls. In addition to the 17-inch touchscreen, the vehicle features cameras instead of rearview mirrors, which send their feed to the dashboard directly in front of the driver while the vehicle is in reverse. The display panel in front of the driver also shows the rearview camera, speed, and remaining battery power.
The Model X, and its sibling the Model S, are not yet available on the market, but interested buyers can reserve one on the Tesla Motors website. The amazing innovations in electric cars, as well as the touchscreen computers in them, provide a look into the future of vehicles. If these are the cars of today, what will we be driving in 20 years?
